In this case I don't want to be right. IMHO, if you're using this laptop for work you shouldn't be messing with it. If you do use this laptop for work, please buy a cheap laptop to use as a learner laptop and stop risking the laptop you use for work.

I only have a GED. By getting my hands dirty and being a member of different forums over the years, I have learnt a lot.

This laptop is for patients, remotely accessing and monitoring treatments specially for COVID-19 these days... and watching movies, emails.

For work I use desktop.

That is a very important use of your laptop. IMHO and against others saying to use a VM, you should keep your laptop as a work laptop and buy another one to experiment with.

My goodness, I see my dentist playing Candy Crush with my tooth fillings

Took the laptop to the local tech, for examination and labs, following are the results:

1. On opening interior was as clean as I got it today.
2. OEM M.2 2230 PCI3x4 was on slot#1 and not 2, that was assuming. Which is closer the the fan....
3. This slots holds both 2230 and 22280.
4. The temp in the lab was pretty cold, despite that it displayed 50C initially, and health as 96%.
5. On connecting to Wi-Fi and an app opened crossed red mark i.e. 60C.
6. Read/Write were the same...2400/1400 MB/s.
7. Switched it to slot #2, (away from the fan) temp/health remained the same but Read/Write dropped to 1700 MB/s., strange!
8. Took it out of the laptop, he had 2 x 2280 to check on slot 1, a Samsung 980 Pro 4x4 and WD PC3x4.
9. On connecting one by one, the temps of both were 33C and Health 100%.
10. Samsung 980 Pro didn't get warm as posted by a member, health of both were 100%.
11. BUT Read /Write of both was 1700 MB/s on slot #1.....that is strange. Was expecting at least a bit more than 2400...

I have no idea why a few months old OEM M.2 NVMe with a 96% health, (temp at 62C) has a higher Read/Write than brand new WD and Samsung.

IF it was only with Samsung 980 Pro 4x4, I would probably understand but why with a new WD with a 100 health and temp 33C.....

And why the OEM Toshiba/Kioxia running at +60C, and health at 96% is giving less i.e. 1700 MB/s on slot #2 on the same laptop.

IF it were firmware, drivers, than OEM Read/Write shouldn't have dropped. Very confused.....about replacing.

Added:

1. Both Samsung and WD had W10 installed and size were 256 GB.
2. Anyways it was a good but stressed experience....learned that Gen 4x4 can run, probably would require to install it's Dell firmware or the brands.
3. WD 2280 results got me disappointed and confused, which to place an order for.
4. On a lighter note, the local techie liked my W11 install and the mint condition of the lap.
5. I asked if reinstalling W11 would fix the speeds of the other checked drives his reply was NO.

I'd probably go with Micron or Toshiba since Dell supports them.....

Curing covid is far simpler vs. now laptop's M.2 NVMe SSD issues and W11...…even the tech was answerless.
Probably running a new SSD for some time is required for it to get use to the new hardware environment...


Added:
All hardware internals were functioning perfectly, as they should.
The fans sensed the OEM drive temp. and started to run but not for Samsung or WD SSDs.
I asked about reinstalling W11, to which he replied do it when you get your 2 new drives.
Was about to get another Dell i9 12th gen PCIx4, but thought let me fix this one's SSD, firstly.....

I would think it would have to do with the specs of the drives. As for the higher temp, it may be because of the higher read/write speeds.

@Winuser , what exactly you mean by specs of the drive? WD was PCI 3x4 as supported by the lap, even Samsung 890 Pro 4x4 got a perfect install, and ran fine , BUT BOTH at a far lower speeds, despite out of the box, health...….

My query, confusion is why at lower speeds for both.

If you mean size, OEM is 512 and Samsung and WD were 256 GB, they should have given more speeds.( Read/Write).

For an example, the read/write speeds of the drives that I mentioned. Look up the OEM site of the drives and you should be able to find all of the specs for the drives.

Crucial, WD, Samsung Evo Gen x3 all should function for 2280. Simply put all or most Gen3.

They won't comment on Samsung Pro 980, that I tested since is Gen 4... remained silent.

I'd go for a 2280/2230 Gen 4 Samsung Pro 980 or Crucial (Micron) x4, backwards compatible, would get the most of Gen3.
Before making the purchase I'd ask the techie to install the 256 Samsung 980 Pro, for a couple of days to see how it works, an experiment no harm.

Hands on testing is the best way to see if the drive will satisfy your needs. If you do buy a new drive, make sure buy one with the GB that is large enough for you. At one time I found that 500GB was large enough. Now I try to go 1TB or larger.

A thought struck my mind, about power plans that probably CPU is running high BUT NOT, and to my surprise:

1. Power Plan is/was balanced.
2. Processor state min 5% and max 100%.
3. But in PCI Express > Link State was OFF.

a. When changed to Maximum power saving the OEM SSD temp fell to 30C.
b. When to Moderate 50C.
c. When turned OFF, crosses the Red i.e. 60C.


I feel changed, reduction in system performance in the other 2 modes, Read /Write increases slightly in Max and Moderate power saving.

It was OFF all these times and even yesterday when 2 other brands were tested, but they remained in the 30sC.

No wonder the OEM SSD when inserted in slot #2 away from the fans, CPU was still running hot.

I feel the that Dell's M2. doesn't have good heat protection.

A few conclusions and queries:

1. WD and Samsung SSDs had a heat protection mechanism.
2. I shouldn't be concerned even if I use Gen 4 M.2 NVmes.

3. Any guesses, expert thoughts how to keep it in Off without the SSD getting hot i.e. No power saving in Link State management?.....could it be a driver issue, or missing?

WD, Samsung 980 Pro Gen 4, despite it being OFF were running at 33C, which this runs if the link state is on max. power saving........

If I'm not mistaken, you don't. Why are you trying to find problems when you're not having any problems? IMHO, you are sounding like the little boy who cried wolf.
