Hi there
If you use only a Wireless connection and you want to run a Windows VM from a Linux host (KVM/QEMU) then unless you go through real hoops (Bridging doesn't work very well) then the simplest way is to connect directly to the VM a cheap USB->wireless adapter

In the VM config attach the USB as a physical USB device -- the device doesn't have to be installed or set up on the host - the usb hardware will be picked up.
Then start the guest, install the driver (make sure the driver is available on an acessible disk before booting up the VM of course) and then it works fine.

Ok there's some limitations -- I usually always use LAN cables but sometimes when travelling with a laptop these aren't available and I still want the Windows VM to be able to access the internet. I'm using a Netgear WNDA100V3 Wireless-N dual band adapter (driver downloadable from the netgear site). Speed is a very passable 300 Mbps -- perfectly satisfactory for most things I need the VM for.

Tested on Home Lan -- works fine and still has HOST access too.

On the VM :

In the VM's config :

Hi there

Saw the comment !!!

But : This section is about Virtualisation -- plenty of people operate mixed environments and also a lot use NAS type non windows servers. I can't see anything wrong in showing ways to get fully functional working Windows Virtual machines on any platform. For Windows on "Physical machines" there's plenty of sections in the Forum for fixing problems on real platforms.

With huge storage available on decent NAS systems there's nothing wrong IMO for having many VM's -especially with "preview" or Beta builds. VM's are a perfectly valid way of testing new Windows builds without"corrupting" a day to day running machine you rely on for productive work.

The Guest Windows machine should in fact if its working properly be totally "Host Agnostic" -- not always possible but one can make it almost so and in some cases external USB devices and Wireless networking can be a problem for Windows VM's under any virtualisation software.

Normally I'd connect to a Windows VM over a LAN from another machine using RDP if a Windows host or XRDP from a Linux host and it would all be done via LAN cable. I was just testing the possibility of running the whole thing with wifi only from a laptop which only had an Internal wifi nic and using a non Windows Host. The only way to get proper internet connectivity with wifi quickly and easily was how I posted.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who runs VM's from NAS servers !!!!.

(BTW the wifi method also works for VM's on the NAS server although not as fast obviously as via fast LAN cable).

Cheers

Hi tjhere

No probs -- understood that of course !!!!!! Some people though haven't any understanding of what VM's are or how they work !!!!!

You should write a "story" which includes evil monsters (reasons to use VMs), and heroes from Virtual Land, that come to the rescue. And then your different topics could be the magic "scrolls" the heroes need to slay the monsters.
This would be a way to get folks to "use" VMs, or at least see the reasons for using them. :)

And when you have explained all possible combinations and solutions... turn it into a book for everyone from school children, up to and including adults.

What a way to pay for the geothermal energy for your retirement years.

If you don't do this, I'll be forced to tell Jules Verne and Arne Saknussemm. :D

Go down into the crater of Snaefells Jökull, which Scartaris's shadow caresses just before the calends of July, O daring traveler, and you'll make it to the center of the earth. I've done so. ~Arne Saknussemm

Yeah... Iceland is where the story was set. Is there a volcano named: Snaefells Jökull in Iceland?

I guess there is...

Snæfellsjökull (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈstnaiːˌfɛlsˌjœːkʏtl̥], snow-fell glacier) is a 700,000-year-old glacier-capped stratovolcano in western Iceland.[2]

Jules Verne seems to have known his stuff.. ^^
