But all the problems with job losses in the Rust Belt, (industrial Midwest, for non-US people) alcoholism and drug abuse, opioid deaths, etc, point to the tremendous dislocations caused by job losses.
That type of disruption started in the 70s, long before the existence of AI. Much as I'd like to blame AI for that, we can't.
And it's fair to say that social programs, etc., did not begin to address all these issues.
What social programs.
Is the government, at any level, prepared to cope with the job losses caused by AI? Answering my own question, the answer is a sad and resounding NO.
And it doesn't matter which political power is in office. None of them will be able to cope. AI is already here and they're just not ready to deal with it.
"Cavemen probably thought the wheel would take jobs. Sure, but only in the short term. Long term, AI and robots will propel humanity forward to greater heights"
Sounds like an AI bot who said it.
