Webcam microphones "flickering" in sound settings.

Running Windows 11 Pro version 21H2, build 22000.832. I have two Logitech webcams and both are having the same microphone issue...

If I open Settings -> System -> Sound my webcam microphone keeps appearing and disappearing randomly second or so. My CPU utilization also goes through the roof. There are no errors appearing my the Device Manager and the camera appears under Cameras and under Sound, Video and Games Controllers. There is no software available to download for either camera on the Logitech website.

The cameras are a QuickCam Orbit AF and a C920 Pro.

I had a similar issue on another PC (completely different hardware, except for the webcams) that we could not resolve.

Why are the microphones bouncing in and out like this?

Open Settings --> System --> Troubleshoot --> Other troubleshooters --> Recording Audio.

Hey! That seems to have fixed the issue, at least for now. Here's hoping that the fix stays!

Unfortunately, that fix did not stick. ...and it isn't working a second time.

Install latest version of sound card driver from manufaturer website.

Tried the latest from Realtek, the one from the Gigabyte website, and one done through a Google search. All the drivers worked fine, but did not resolve the webcam microphone issue.

At this point I have a microphone connected to the audio in jack on the computer and disabled the webcam microphone in Device Manager. The separate microphone is working fine.

Also worth noting... both of these webcams work fine connected to a Windows 10 laptop.

Just to follow up on this thread...

The issue wasn't related to the web cam. I had the same issue with other audio devices whenever the Realtek audio device was enabled in the device manager. It acted like some audio device was being plugged and unplugged very rapidly.

I recently fixed the issue while trying to get a USB audio card to work. I disabled the "Signal Enhancements" found on the old sound dialog under the properties for the Realtek device. Once I did that, the flickering stopped and everything is working as it should.
