Can Windows Server be used to host your own website as long as you already have your own domain? If so, how would I set all that up?

You need to forward ports so it can be accessed do you have a static internet ip? You need to make all security is uptodate as it can be attacked by scripts

Be aware that many ISP's, especially some cable companies and hotspot providers, block many ports into your modem, and you will have to either put your server in a dmz or forward port 80 and possibly 443 to your server. You also will only be able to run one server if you only have 1 IP (without jumping through hoops like using a reverse proxy). You can run multiple sites on a single server though, so long as your server has the resources to do so.

Some ISP's will also terminate your service if they find you running servers on a residential account.

Also, you open yourself up to potential hacks to your network as well, since a web server can be compromised and be used to launch attacks on your other PC's on the network.

Just be careful.

I guess I'll contact my ISP and ask about it. I have Cox Internet.

The ISPs in my area provide Static IP addresses as an extra-cost option. It usually is important to know their procedures in amount of bandwidth and throttling if too busy.

Yep, I just called my ISP, and I would have to convert my residential account to a business account in order for it to be supported. They wouldn't necessarily turn off my service or anything, BUT if I had any technical issues with wiring, then they aren't allowed to fix it for me. . . .

As someone who makes a living doing e-commerce with websites, let me suggest you go to a hosting company. I have a dedicated server that provides me 7 IP's and Plesk for $30 per month. No support though. That is an extra cost option. I've been with them for 5 years and had ZERO down time that I didn't cause myself. I run the Centos operating system which is a Linux product so, if you are handy with Linux you can forego the Plesk or Cpanel management software. I think the management software is worth its weight in gold. You will get much better speed and reliability with a hosting company.

Unless you have fast fiber, you also have to worry about bandwidth. Consumer internet is usually fast down and a lot slower upload.

@JMedlock83, like everything else there's always a "depends". With that how big is your site? Is it one where you're going to have forums, or perhaps a simple photography website? If it's a simple website you might not have issues, if it's a complicated site, well...

Another option (one I use) is a hosting site like Bluehost.com. I have my own photography website I maintain myself, but Bluehost hosts. Cost depends on services and features (mine is $167 annually) Here I don't need to worry about maintaining a server and all that goes with it. All I need to be concerned with is maintaining my website.

A weather website, where I post forecasts, have live radar, and maybe a small store
