What happens if I don't install KB5058411

No. In the past I have downloaded updates a couple of times when I had similar problems, and I looked into doing that for this one. But from what I got from the instructions it looked like the procedure for doing that was quite complicated and involved first getting some software that decripted the download and then running that through the descriptor.

That seemed like a potentially error prone process, so I didn't try it.

Go here: Microsoft Update Catalog KB5058411

Click the Download link on the right. (You want the one that's NOT Windows Server and NOT Arm64. Should be the middle choice.

That will present you with two possible downloads. You probably only need KB5058411 as kb5043080 is dated and I'm guessing you got it long ago. You can download it and attempt to install it FIRST but if it says it's "Not appropriate" or "already installed", etc, then you're good.

The downloaded file(s) are .msu files. Those are Microsoft Standalone Installer files. You just double click and they run.

I copied and ran the middle one:

And when I did I got this:
3.webp
The problem was - I let it run for more than 10 minutes and it never ended. My Internet speed is 500/500, so that should have been more than enough time.

Clicking Cancel did not work, so I had to shut it down from the taskbar. It did create c:\$WinREagent - which I expected. But the 1.35 GB size never changed. So I'm still stuck.

Whoops! Maybe not ....

Since this is a new PC I thought maybe I really did have to install kb5043080. So I deleted the $WInReagent file and tried that one. It said it was not applicable, so I ended it.

Then I restored c:\WinREAgent and tried kb5058411. It said something like "Do you want to install this update?" and I said Yes. It ran for quite a while and then I got this:

4.webp
So I'll check Event Viewer and see if I can find anything helpful.

First, I have to say that it's weird you got the Chinese description. When I first went there, I got Spanish. I re-googled the Windows Update Catalog and it gave me a version in English. That's the link I posted for you. Odd doings at MS.

But, sorry to hear it didn't work. If it were me, and it didn't take me days to get a system set up the way I want followed by a week of minor tweaks, I'd do a fresh install. OR, you could just wait for the next rollup as that will contain this rollup. Sometimes they just work when you do that (Sometimes not).

If it were me, and it didn't take me days to get a system set up the way I want
There's the rub - it would take me days to get all my software in place and properly configured. So I'll try waiting for the next update. I don't see that doing that will cost me anything.
