What is a local account??? and what is it good for????

Have to say I wouldn’t dare do that - I’ve had two external drives fail on me. And they have a greater likelihood of getting corrupted the more times you plug and unplug them. But I guess you could have another backup on another external drive.

Not 20 years on the exact same drives, I buy new drives every couple of years. Internal HDD’s
I mean on their own individual drives aside of C: And yes, my drives all have images.

To be precise, I have a HDD for photos, a HDD for music and one for videos. My documents and downloads are on another HD drive as well. All these drives are imaged onto their own individual SSD’s and removed.
Also, freefilesync makes a mirror copy of all my document files on yet another HDD

I agree. I would never move my User folders to an external drive. On my two desktops computers I leave the Desktop in the default location, my Documents and Pictures are on OneDrive. The other folders I moved to the internal HDD, Drive D:/.

I like have the computer as a back up as well! In case an external hard drive fails. Ideally I like having two computers, one backing up the other one, in case either computer fails and an external hard drive. As happened to me last week - both the laptop and the backup drive connected to it.

From the moment I read the thread title I've had that song playing in my head, and everytime I see the thread title. Going on over a week now. I was going to make a joke about it at the beginning but thought I'd leave it for someone else.😃

Win10 & unfortunately OneDrive: Can't completely rid myself of this!!
I FINALLY managed to move the default location of all the (shell: ... ) folders off the C-drive and onto my external hard drive!! (don't ask me to explain...how I screwed up...but I did it over 50X, and it involved multiple mistakes like: I thought (Win+e) was just another way to bring up directories; I needed to do repeated "Restore to default locations"; and on Step 5 I repeatedly clicked on [Move] instead of [OK]...

Nonetheless, I'm going to celebrate by reviewing a few moments in this thread where I learned other things:

(shell:My Pictures)
I never knew about (shell:Folder name). Are there other things about what comes up when I execute (Win+e) I should know?
He needs to get on Teams with ONE person that knows what they're doing
And I'm inclined to go with Hazel, but seeing as I already made my choice between:
(#1 Index a dirty drive and install it) vs
(#2 create a local account...delete my MS account) Here is that suggestion: "There's no need to reinstall windows to straighten it out. Just back up your data to an external drive, create a new LOCAL account , copy your data into it, and then delete your MS account."
I decided on the latter and now need to finish going through with it.

So now that I have taken everything off my MS account what I need to do before figuring out how to simply "delete my MS Account from this computer" I now need to get my Email account working on this computer's local account and from the external drive's install of Outlook 2010 so that I can continue to communicate.

LOL, I must be getting old.
The title of this thread has been reminding me of a line in a song.
It has taken me a week (7 days), to remember the song and the line...

"War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?"

Email time... Now I'm working on sidestepping Outlook for Thunderbird.

Though it seems, with the help of software I may need to purchase, that I should be able to flow the information from Outlook into Thunderbird I haven't found software able to capture and move the data in Outlook's "Notes" field, where I regularly post important date-stamped information.

Weirdly, from looking at the interfaces of the (less than 10) programs I installed, it seems there's a "pst-to" Cartel behind them--they're incredibly similar-to-same. Regardless, none of them seems to do the trick. (Thunderbird isn't much help either. It's help facilities seem to be a gathering place for (sponsored) teams of "experts".
Outlook, or Outlook of yore, seems the best email program out there.
What's happening when into the address bar of File Explorer, I enter (a) shell:Music
Everything was in order when I left. When I returned from my Thunderbird venture I was just double checking the locations of the shell folders...

What happened to ALL the shell folders and why can't I restore them or move them to the H drive? (parenthetically (#6), why can't I bring up a Properties Window for Desktop similar to those demonstrated for the other shell folders?)

I seem to have burned my bridges here…

I’ve tried so much, and have had to go in so many directions, I no longer have a good idea what I need to do and where I need to go.
  1. Moving Shell Directories: Things I thought I had done (moving shell directories) just came undone.
  2. Leaving Outlook: Things I think I need to do to leave Outlook aren’t working out. I may just have to install Outlook 2010, a version I liked.
  3. Converting to Thunderbird: Things I think I need to do I can’t do (moving from Outlook to Thunderbird) I can’t do manually (csv -> ordered Excel file). I also can find no program (Cigati; Turgs (Pst Converter, Pst Viewer; Software Imperial; MailsDaddy; Mail Store; SysInfo Tools PST recovery; Advik; SysCurve; SysTools) that correctly parses the pst information. Half of those programs have the same interface; I have pst-conversion-related .sbd files everywhere; and there is no clear explanation how to import the sbd's into Thunderbird.
  4. Image the drive: Things I have been advised to do either I don’t understand or I haven’t been able to do. No one’s explained to me why I want to image a drive that contains material that I want to get rid of/replace. What good could ever come of restoring the image?
  5. I WANT TO:
    a) Side by side, establish a Local Drive (or what I think a local drive is) next to my “Microsoft” formatted drive;
    b) ensure a working email/Contacts program is working on the Local Drive (which, hopefully could be on an external drive),
    c) reformat/replace the (Microsoft - C) drive with a clean (no 365, NO OneDrive).
This is what I believe those who weren’t in the “IMAGE THE DRIVE!” group were telling me to do. It was their advice I decided to go with. But when things went awry they disappeared first.
Nonetheless, I’ve totally lost sight of my direction through this whole mess.
  1. What I want is to end up with a computer, running Windows 11, with no trace of MS 365 or OneDrive, capable of running my email addresses in POP mode, and of employing the Contact information I’ve established over the years. Once that happens I WILL
    a) IMMEDIATELY INDEX THE COMPLETE DRIVE,
    b) save off the data I generate or use to another drive, the way I used to do (before OneDrive)
    c) begin a regular backup of its contents because I recognize how important a backup is.
    d) Rather than migrate wholesale to Thunderbird I will manually add contacts to Thunderbird as I use them—thus, after a year ending up with a smaller number of contacts and contact info (Outlook’s Notes field has been its most important Contact field—and the most difficult to accommodate to T-bird—to the way I operate.
  2. This isn’t getting any easier. All this time, I’ve been reading thread after thread seeming to say that, in effect, Microsoft is making it more and more difficult: to establish “Local Drives”: to avoid Microsoft 365; to avoid OneDrive… In other words, I’m feeling it’s less and less likely I’ll ever be able to either solve my problems or function in this Win11 environment.
As an aside, I never blamed anyone on this forum for anything—or at least I never intended to do so. If you feel I did, I apologize. I got very frustrated and sometimes testy. I DO BLAME OneDrive FOR ALL OF THIS (PERIOD!) and for ruining my computer experience.

If anyone is still interested...

Win10 & unfortunately OneDrive: Can't completely rid myself of this!!
Image the drive: Things I have been advised to do either I don’t understand or I haven’t been able to do. No one’s explained to me why I want to image a drive that contains material that I want to get rid of/replace. What good could ever come of restoring the image?
So you can start again if you make a mess of things.

I don't have any of your problems. I ran a clean install [including telling it I wanted to store my files locally], uninstalled OneDrive, uninstalled the trial Office365.

ok..that answer makes sense. I've cleared the C-drive of any information I want to keep. I'll start the imaging.

This'll be my first use of Macrium. Since the C-Drive is only has 162 GB data on it, I should be able to save the image to a...

Just noticed that my C-drive has a problem related to a huge problem the computer had when Diane initially bought it--one that required extensive MS support work just to get the computer up and running. We were assured the problem had all been dealt with but now I'm wondering...

Will the presence of a 953 GB Encrypted NTFS partition affect my ability to Image, Clean, or write Win11 to the C-Drive. Does the presence of this BitLocker partition take away or in any way affect 953 GB?

No. I use BitLocker. I use Macrium Reflect. The Macrium Reflect image files are not encrypted. Nothing needs to be done with BitLocker.
