OS
Win 11
Why is everything either not opening when I click on it or taking several minutes before it does anything? Never had this issue in Win 10. Sometimes in file explorer, it it'll take several minutes before being able to see what's in a folder?

Steam is blank. Games won't launch. What is going on?

Type winver in the Taskbar search box and post the "OS Build number".
<--- my OS Build number.

I'll just post this here in case you need it. This is for an In-Place Upgrade, which is a repair install of Windows.
It will fix any... Windows problems, and not touch your programs or drivers.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this. :-)
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Get the Windows 11 ISO image and save it to your desktop...

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

I don’t know if this is in the eleven forum but it is in the ten forum. The extension association might need restoring so you can mount an ISO. Scroll down to the blue text that says “ISO” click on it, download the reg file and run it.

I had a problem a ways back where I had associated 7zip with ISO and .cab files.
I had to un-associate them from 7zip... then I could "mount" ISOs.

Probably the same for similar programs like WinRAR, etc.

You can also just associate ISOs with Windows Explorer, in Settings...

Image1.jpg

Image2.jpg

Then you'll be able to "mount" ISO files. Assuming that's what you're having problems with.

Nope. If WinRAR is set as your default app for opening ISO files, you can still right-click on an ISO file and choose Open with File Explorer. Doing this will mount it, and the Eject command will then be visible when you right-click on the virtual DVD-ROM drive in question.

Nope. If WinRAR is set as your default app for opening ISO files, you can still right-click on an ISO file and choose Open with File Explorer. Doing this will mount it, and the Eject command will then be visible when you right-click on the virtual DVD-ROM drive in question.
just so we are clear, the mounting worked it just did some crazy stuff along the way.

I don't have WinRAR... but with 7zip, you have to un-associate 7zip with ISOs... or there is no mount option on the right click menu.

Sounds like there's an issue with your system. Lots of times people blame the OS, when the OS is simply the messenger.

Anyway, no issues with Steam here. Also, no issues with games not on Steam. I've been playing The Division 2 relentlessly for weeks without any issues.

My Windows build is below my avatar. You can see my specs under system one in system specs.

We need you to be more specific. "Just did some crazy stuff" doesn't help us help you. :-)

If my "short version" of the tutorial doesn't help... then try the full tutorial... it has lots of pictures too.

Now you know why you always need to create realiable backup copies of all your important data, preferrably using a 3-2-1 Backup Strategy or better variant.
I don't have WinRAR... but with 7zip, you have to un-associate 7zip with ISOs... or there is no mount option on the right click menu.
I don't have 7-Zip. I have WinRAR. Which immediately helps to explain why I don't have any such problems. lol :p

I don't DO Steam.
But REVO Uninstaller (free) can uninstall anything "and" can remove the leftovers...

Also, you may want to read some of this... I don't know if this is affecting you, but it's something to be aware of.
AMD 7800X3D melting issues

And this...

It was a voltage issue that was killing the CPUs. Supposedly there are BIOS updates to fix the problem.
So you may just need a BIOS update if it's not too late.
