What resets my BIOS and stops Windows from being awoken from sleep?

I previously asked about my PC going into a sleep from which it couldn't be woken (see Win11 goes into unwakeable sleep after the last update). Although the answers there helped, I think I have found a deeper cause, and so am posting this as a new thread.

I have discovered that the BIOS on my PC gets reset. I rarely go into the BIOS, and so didn't realise. As part of resetting the BIOS, virtualisation is disabled, and for some reason that escapes me, this means that the PC won't wake up from sleep. The "Wake from sleep" BIOS setting was never disabled. As mentioned in the other thread, I haven't updated the BIOS for some time, partly as I can't work out which version I have (the one showing in system info doesn't match anything on their web site) and partly because I can't work out which one I should have. Either way, it can't be to do with a BIOS update as there hasn't been one.

I can't remember offhand what I had just done the first time I noticed the sleep problem, but I did get an error trying to start a VM. After enabling virtualisation again, I was able to run VMs and the PC was wakeable.

As I mentioned in post #8 there, I changed the power settings, and the PC wouldn't wake. At some point later, I installed ESET anti-virus and the BIOS was reset, meaning that virtualisation was disabled and the PC wouldn't wake from sleep.

The other day I was running a script, and didn't want the PC to sleep, as this would have interrupted the script. I changed the power plan to tell it not to sleep, and this also reset the BIOS, disabling virtualisation and preventing the PC from sleeping (which it did after I changed the power plan back and left the PC for a while).

So I have two questions...

1) Why does my BIOS get reset after apparently random events? I can maybe understand that something like an anti-virus might change the BIOS, although I would be surprised if it reset it, but why would changing the power plan reset the BIOS?

2) Why does disabling virtualisation prevent the PC from waking? The "Wake from sleep" BIOS setting wasn't changed.

Anyone able to advise? Thanks

I would suspect a bad CMOS battery. Bad battery plus a blip in power and it would reset.

Hmm, interesting idea, but why would the reset get done when I change power settings or install software if the problem were a bad battery? Not saying you're wrong, I have no idea about this, I'm just wondering.

Thanks

Unknown, but firmware should not reset unless you go in the firmware and change it, the battery is bad or you use a special tool to modify the firmware (typically something only provided by the manufacturer)

OK, thanks anyway. Maybe I'll try a new battery and see. Can't imagine they are expensive.
