Hello.
Couple weeks ago i was unfortunate to cross path with infamous WHEA Logger Event ID 18 Machine Check Exception Cache Hierarchy Error. Every time when i want to play something demanding like Warframe, total war warhammer 2 or even garrys mod. Screen goes dark after just clicking icons and whole pc just restart itself.

Only thing that is registered its a WHEA bug in a Event viever with random APIC ID (1, 8, 9, 12...). When looking around other forums and this one , noticed a large amount of these bugs. My bet its a windows updates, but sadly i don’t remember when the crashes appeared. Checked temps, played around in bios, checked for mechanical damage, and no fix. Below i put things that i tried and also specs.

  1. Updated everything that needed update (Windows, drivers,Bios)
  2. Memtest86 (passed)
  3. I uninstalled gpu drivers with DDU and installed multiple different with no success
  4. Checked for temperature, between 70 to 80
  5. Re pasted and add new termopads to gpu
  6. Under-clocking, over-clocking didn’t bring any results
  7. Bios reset to default settings didn’t bring any results
  8. Disabled Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) no success
  9. Disabled Global C-States, nope
  10. Tested each XMP profiles (3000,3200,3600) no success
  11. Added positive voltage offsets and tested each. Added +0.025 V to cpu and worked only for like 3 hours and crashes and started adding more voltages to test them with no results (+0.050, V+0.075, V+0.100 V)
  12. Removed all CPU overclocking with voltages and none voltages, no success

Hi. Thanks for answers.

All drivers are up to date

Did the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow. With these results: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Just 1 error is a test fail and testing can be aborted.

The more the passes the better the testing conditions.

It sometimes takes passes into the 20's to detect malfunctioning RAM.

The RAM can be tested all at one time or one at a time in the same DIMM.

I am lazy today (sick yesterday). Here is what google AI and I believe it is pretty spot-on. I would follow these steps.

The WHEA Event ID 18: Cache Hierarchy Error is a critical hardware instability log generated when the CPU detects an internal communications failure (usually within its L1/L2/L3 cache blocks or memory controller). It typically causes a sudden black screen freeze, a hard lock, or an immediate automatic reboot without showing a traditional Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). [1, 2, 3]
This error is overwhelmingly common on AMD Ryzen processors (especially the Ryzen 3000, 5000, and 5000X3D series), though it occasionally impacts Intel processors. It most frequently triggers during low-load idle transitions (like watching YouTube, web browsing, or waking from sleep) rather than under heavy gaming stress. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Primary Causes
  • Unstable Memory Overclocking: The CPU's Infinity Fabric or Memory Controller cannot handle your RAM's XMP, DOCP, or EXPO profile.
  • Aggressive Factory Boosts / Undervolting: Features like Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) or a poorly tuned Curve Optimizer can starve individual cores of necessary voltage at low workloads.
  • Outdated BIOS: Older motherboard firmware mishandling core voltage tables.
  • Degraded or Faulty CPU Silicon: A physically defective processor core that requires a manufacturer replacement (RMA). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide
Work through these fixes starting from the simplest configuration changes to isolating hardware defects.

1. Turn Off RAM and CPU Overclocks (XMP/DOCP/PBO) [1]
Overclocking profiles push the CPU's memory controller to its absolute limit. [1, 2]
  • Restart your PC and press Del or F2 to enter your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI.
  • Locate and disable XMP, DOCP, or EXPO; let your RAM run at its baseline stock speed (e.g., 2133MHz or 2666MHz).
  • Locate Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) or Performance Boost and switch it to Disabled or Auto.
  • Save changes and reboot to see if the crashes stop. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2. Update Your Motherboard BIOS and Chipset Drivers [1]
Motherboard vendors regularly push BIOS updates that specifically stabilize CPU core voltage delivery and fix microcode bugs causing cache drops. [1]
  • Go to your motherboard manufacturer’s official support page (e.g., ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock).
  • Download and flash the latest stable BIOS version for your exact motherboard model.
  • Download and install the latest Chipset Drivers directly from AMD's Driver Portal or Intel's website, depending on your build. [1, 2, 3, 4]

3. Adjust Power Supply Idle Control in BIOS [1]
Many Ryzen systems crash during idle transitions because the CPU drops its voltage lower than a specific core can handle to save power. [1, 2]
  • Enter your BIOS and look for a setting named Power Supply Idle Control (often hidden under Advanced -> AMD CBS).
  • Change it from Low Current Idle or Auto to Typical Current Idle.
  • Alternative: Try disabling Global C-States in the BIOS to prevent the CPU from entering deep, unstable low-power sleep states. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

4. Find the Specific Core Using the APIC ID [1]
If the crashes persist, you can pinpoint the exact core causing the error by checking the logs deeper. [1]
  1. Right-click the Windows Start menu and open Event Viewer.
  2. Go to Windows Logs -> System.
  3. Find the red WHEA-Logger Event 18 error and click on it.
  4. Look at the description field for the Processor APIC ID number. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
If the APIC ID is consistently the exact same number every single time your system crashes, it means that one specific core is physically unstable and starving for power. You can attempt to bypass this by going into your BIOS Curve Optimizer and adding a small positive voltage offset (e.g., +5 or +10) specifically to that core, or adding a generic small positive CPU Vcore voltage offset (+0.05V). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

What if Nothing Works?
If your system continues to log Event 18 errors even with a flashed BIOS, stock RAM speeds, and PBO turned off, the internal cache on your processor is permanently unstable. [1, 2]
If your processor is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer (AMD Warranty Support or Intel Support) to file an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) claim. Clearly state that you are experiencing unresolvable WHEA Event 18 Cache Hierarchy Errors at default stock settings; manufacturers are highly familiar with this specific error and will usually replace the faulty processor promptly. [1, 2]
To help narrow down the next steps, could you provide your CPU model and motherboard model? Let me know if you need instructions on how to manually adjust your core voltages or if you've already tried disabling XMP/DOCP. [1, 2]

AI can make mistakes, so double-check responses
