When and if my PC will be able to handle Windows 11

Yes, it can only be guess-work until we get to see the release version. It's a pretty good bet that the Insider program will kick unsupported hardware out of the W11 program come the release.

...I know which way to bet. (That MS won't officially allow Win 11 on unsupported hardware.)

For an unsupported non-insider install I wouldn't want to bet against you, but it's no so clear-cut. As I said, I'll find out soon (and have that machine's previous W10 install ready to restore should you be correct).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Maybe machines in the developer channel will remain in the developer channel.

I have read that dev channel machines will stop receiving builds that are part of the release path. They will receive dev builds that leapfrog the release version. I'm not sure whether that only applies to PCs that would qualify for the release version.

Honestly we don't know what MS will do in the future and I doubt that publication knows either. It's just speculation on their part and good for clicks. When MS decided s on what to do, then we'll all know

Thanks, Brink!

It'll be interesting if it turns out that MS won't push 11 via Windows Update onto hardware that doesn't meet their narrow requirements, but that it will be installable for those who want it.

That's quite a change from early July.

The link had been posted a few times early on when ths forum was created, but it's been a while since I posted it, so no surprise you and many others haven't actually seen it.

But you're spot on - in addition to the link Brink posted, many news sites / blog sites have reported the same thing: that Microsoft has stated that even devices that don't meet the criteria will still be able to install Windows 11 - just not through Windows Update. They specifically mention that you can get the .ISO from them and install it / upgrade Windows 10, but as we know, you can just as easily generate an .ISO via UUPDUMP.

Truthfully, I'm glad they've eased up on the restrictions, in that it will allow for installs on 'unsupported' hardware, because if they had kept the restrictions in place, there would probably have been a rash of malware-laden 'hacks' to allow installation on unsupported hardware, and I'm really hoping that that was at least a factor in Microsoft making this decision moving forward.

Maybe I'm not very informed on this but I really swore that as long as you met everything but the CPU then you could still keep or install Windows 11.

The last time I checked Windows Update, it told me that I can upgrade but because it's not recommended hardware I might get bugs or errors.

No, originally, if you did not meet the requirements, you'd be allowed to install only the previews, but not the final release. Now, though, they've changed it. You can install it on old hardware, just not as a direct update through Windows Update. Which is a good thing, because I'd bet that, in spite of being BIOS, not UEFI, and having no TPM, my old Core i7 965 EE (1st generation Core iX CPU) would still be able to run Windows 11. Maybe not as nicely as my current rig, for sure - but it would run it. Just like my Core2Quad 6600-based machine would probably have run Windows 10 had it survived.

If they give you those warnings, it's more cor them trying to CYA than anything - they want you to realize that there are possible issues that may crop up and it will be on you to find the answers as that would be an unsupported (by them) installation.

As for not being informed - lol, no worries, man - Microsoft has already backtracked at least twice ( I actually count 3 times) from what they originally mentioned back in June, so it's very, very easy to not be informed - If they come across as not being fully informed themselves, they can't expect us to be any better informed, right? :lmao:

It says nothing about updates after the initial installation...

I currently have W11 running well on a 1st gen i5. Come the release I'll be able to see if it continues to get the CUs....

@dawn121988

There are some new developments in Windows 11 hardware requirements that may be of interest to you.

1. There is a new Microsoft PC Health App available, but the only one I can find so far is only available to Insiders. I'm pretty sure there's one available to the general public, but so far . . . :( Maybe one of the participants here can point you to it. Hopefully, you'll find that your PC qualifies.

2. Microsoft has relaxed some Windows 11 requirements (I didn't think they would, but they did).
Microsoft won’t stop you installing Windows 11 on older PCs

3. It looks like Microsoft isn't going to stop us from installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. (Speculation was that they wouldn't, but . . . )
Windows 11 will be installable on most PCs with unsupported CPUs via ISOs

4. And finally, How To Geek is a great site, and has lots of Windows 11 information and articles. I subscribe to their newsletter which is a really nice publication.

Yes this preview version is intended for Insiders, but it is freely downloadable by anyone. There a link for it in this post...

This is really starting to remind me of when Microsoft ended the free upgrade to Windows 10 program on July 29, 2016, but extended it for assistive technologies users. Then the free upgrade to Windows 10 for those users ended on December 31, 2017. And yet, as of today, you can still upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free using the ISO file. It seems like Microsoft might be tracking on the same path with upgrading to Windows 11. Upgrading to Windows 11 via Windows Update will be much more restrictive than manually upgrading via an ISO file. And there will likely be the same myriad of users who are going to lament that Windows Update won't upgrade them to Windows 11 but will dig in their heals and absolutely refuse to download the ISO file and do it manually.

    Fast!
I have a few odd questions well here it is: I am running Windows 10 which is original windows for my laptop and it shows on both scans I tried for my PC that my CPU is not currently able to run Windows 11. I have been thinking about running a Dual Boot for a while now but here is the problem my PC can't currently run the "Windows 11" so should I make a USB right now of the current windows 11 for my PC to use at a later date or just keep checking until my PC is supported and then download it then. Plus what is the best suggest way to check to find out if and when my CPU will be included. Should I just randomly scan my PC every few weeks. Or should I sign up for a specific newsletter or site.

I have only recently signed up for elevenforum and I have been a member of some of the previous forums for awhile now and always go to tenforums when ever I have a issue or question so now since windows 11 is coming out I was just wondering where the best sites are to find information because windows itself seem more about selling windows 11 PCs and less about updating. So I was just wondering on where to find the best info for when and if my PC will be able to handle Windows 11.
I seriously doubt if CPU's that are deemed unsuitable now will ever be supported. The reason they aren't is that they lack the ability to cope with or even run some of the security measures that Microsoft has in the works for Windows 11. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg as far as what the differences between 11 and 10 will be.
