That's exactly what I wanted but for some reason Win 11 would not give me the Always use option. I'll try it again.

I just downloaded and installed a program to view XML files, didn't have any issue with the right-click Open with, just looks a bit different.

Apps > Default Apps > photos click the arrow in the box on the right and change from photos to whatever you like.

... Or, right click>Properties>Change and you'll get the from now on thing.

I can do that too but Win 11 just does not allow me to set defaults for JPG and PNG files. Until I can do that simple thing I am not going to move to Win 11.

I've gotten .png, .jpg, jpeg and .webp files to open in Windows Photo Viewer by just double-clicking them. The checkbox for "Always use this program" worked after clicking Choose another app.

I don't want to use Windows Photo Viewer for those filetypes. I want to use Irfanview as the default and so far, I can't do it. I am working on a possible solution.

In File Explorer right-click a .jpg and choose 'Open with... > Choose another app. Scroll to the bottom of the list and choose 'More apps'. Scroll to the bottom of that list and choose 'Look for another app on this PC'. Now you can browse for and select your Irfanview.

Any app you select this way will forever more appear in the Open with list in File Explorer, and in the Default apps settings, as these 'before and after' screenshots show.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Thanks for the people who helped me with the Irfanview file associations problem. My fix can be viewed in this other thread .

Microsoft have listened to the complaints about the taskbar and may fix it in a release after Christmas in 2022 which coincides with when we could expect the Windows 11 22H1 update.
If that's true, I will then do a fresh install of Win-11. I did have it for 2 days and with their stuff up with the taskbar, I rolled back to 10.

I'm now for keeping Win 11 Pro. Just this week I finished installing W11 Pro on one of my dual boot partitions, my ASUS laptop, and my Intel NUC. All of them are now imaged by Macrium Reflect 8 so that I can revert back to a freshly installed state. That just leaves one Win 10 Pro to go. I'll get around to it sometime. I also have a Win 10 32 bit laptop which will never be upgraded to Win 11. It is dedicated to a very old 16 bit app.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

It is Windows 10 with a new name and set of icons.
Most of the time I forget I am running Windows 11. It is the same OS with new features.

No, it's not. Drag and drop capability of the taskbar isn't the only useful feature that went missing. I just saw a post from someone on Reddit saying you should try Windows 11 with 300 icons flat in the Start Menu. :wink:

Exactly. Desk Bands have gone missing, albeit it is still possible to use different apps that can help to ease the pain to some degree, at least if you are lucky enough to find an app that does exactly what you are looking for. For example, if you want your internet speed to be shown on the taskbar, for Windows 10 and below, there are a whole plethora of programs available that you can choose between. Whereas Windows 11 limits these choices, very severely, as these programs do not show anything on the Windows 11 taskbar. In fact the only exception that I have been able to find in this regard was this one:

To me the question is moot. I have almost never (there were special cases :wink:) changed the OS on a working machine and I am not about to start now. This desktop was built with Windows 10 and it will keep running Windows 10 (unless some future update to 11 will end up being so awsome that I will absolutely have to have it). Whenever I build a new one (or get a new laptop) - it will most likely come with Windows 11 and that's when I will use it for daily work.
