Solved Why am I still on v 22H2?

From what all I've seen around the net, I should be on v 23H2. I get regular updates so why hasn't Microsoft been so kind as to download an update to me? After all, 23H2 was released last October. Seems like everybody else has upgraded.

Just do this...



23H2 is already installed. This Enablement Package will turn it ON.

I'll give Antspants reply a try tomorrow after my normal Wednesday morning backup has run. No sense trying it now and if something screws up having to restore a two day old backup.

Just jump straight to Ghots suggestion, I just thought the thread would help to explain to you why you're still on 22H2

23H2 was installed on everyone's comp around July 2023.
It just wasn't turned ON for everyone.

MS "started rolling out 23H2 around October 2023... aka turning it ON.
That's also when they released the Enablement Package for those that couldn't wait.

My personal policy is to avoid system upgrades until they've been out in the world for several months with no ill effects. I speak from personal experience. I have very little confidence in MS working out bugs, closing security holes, etc. I'm not a gamer or power user. Heck, if I could I'd still be on WinXP or Win7.

Even when I was working (been retired for 19-years now) I was wary of system (not MicroSoft) upgrades. The worst experience I had was 30-years ago. I was deputy administrator for a regional 9-1-1 call center. Our 9-1-1 system included mobile data termimals (not computers) in 300+ police squad cars. Functionality included rudimemtary two-way alpha-numeric messaging. Things were running smoothly...planning and exhaustive testing paid off.

Then one day the corporate sales rep for the hardware was in my office extolling the virtues and advantages of an upgrade to Version 2 of the messagimg system. I was assured that we'd keep all V1 functionality and gain all sorts of wonderous new functions. Besides, support for V1 was ending...had ended. The boss was pressing for the upgrade...and he was the boss. It didn't take long to discover that significant portions of V1 functionality was missing. But by that time the V1 server was physically gone. It took the better part of a year for my in-house software engineer to restore the missing V1 functionality (yes, we hacked the V2 server software). Ever since I have had a healthy skepticism of hardware and software upgrades.

However... 23H2 has been out for almost a year now, it's pretty well de-bugged.
The only problems with 23H2 anymore, are wonky updates.
But those come every few months, no matter what version you're on.

Last but not least, 24H2 will start rolling out to RTM Windows in 2 months.

I just bought a Win11 laptop (23H2) and have turned off Win Updates. I'll not update Win11 for at least a few months. My computing needs are simple.

Well, that's up to you, but there's a new bootkit in town. ^^


Supposedly the August 13th patch protects against this.



The patches at the end of the month, the "preview updates", can be skipped.
They're optional anyway.
They are just a preview of the "next" months patch Tuesday's update.

Just ran the enablement package and I'm at 23H2 build 22631.4037

The wait a few months argument is a flawed philosphy!

You are actually putting yourself at risk as updates fix known bugs, and you are continuing with such bugs for several months longer than you need to!

A better and safer policy is to make an image backup of current version, then update to latest version as soon as possible, knowing you can reveert if you get any issues.
