For most day-to-day tasks, browsing, email, photo editing, no gaming my old computer was more than adequate, if that was all I used it for an upgrade probably wouldn't be happening this decade. However, I occasionally edit video and do some video upscaling. Topaz Video Enhance AI eats processor and GPU cycles like the cookie monster. My current computer is four times faster on video upscaling, but it still takes a while. If Windows Defender scan time is bugging you, do you have fast disks? I don't use Windows Defender but I expect it would fly through a M2 drive damned quick and be a hell of a lot slower on a large 5400rpm disk.

Seriously, I'm not as patient as I could be, so I like things to open and run quickly. Plus, I play the occasional high-end video game.

I always get the best I can afford; usually one or two years back.

I create tutorials for my Windows 10 (soon to be 11) students, so need a really good machine. I also do a bit of photo stuff.

I'm in the "spend more now, keep it longer" and/or "spend more now, and get a better productivity payback" camp(s). With increasing prices for gear over time, I too try to buy the best I can afford. That said, I have yet to buy and build any multi-CPU, multi-GPU workstation grade desktops, either. I can't afford those!

In brief I buy the biggest and best you can, it will be faster and better and stay current longer before I need to replace anything. Especially games

With the current 12th generation Intel core, if you bought today, that would be 10th or 11th generation, is that what you mean? It would make sense, as you don't get to absorb the $ peak at its worst.

I prefer the mobility of laptops and haven't had a desktop computer this century.
I want my primary laptop to be fast with a high-quality color accurate screen.
I do photo editing, short term trading, and a bit of software development.
I like to upgrade every 2 to 3 years.

Yes. I didn't know at the time, but I wound up with a 10th gen i7 when I bought this desktop. My thought was that it would probably be the last one for quite awhile.

Both my laptop and teaching desktop qualify for Windows 11, so I'll probably stick with them for the duration.

The declared purpose of WD Full scans is to clean up inactive malware remnants after you have removed malware. You do not run them routinely. Quick scans are sufficient for malware detection & initiating removal.

I'm with Gary on this, my last desktop was running Windows '95 (still can, in fact). I far prefer to lounge on my couch with the TV on while I'm browsing, rather than being shut away in a computer room.

I actually don't need (or want) my main machine to be that powerful, a modest cpu and RAM will do. I prefer to have different machines for different purposes. The overiding purpose of my main machine is storage for all my personal files and general browsing. My System One only has 8GB RAM and an AMD Athlon Silver 3.050U but is more than up to the use I put it to.

For my more demanding uses I have other machines. ~~My other car is a Porsche~~. I have a laptop with a 10th gen i7 and 32GB RAM that runs all my Hyper-V VMs.

Oh, my, I'm even worse than that, after the full scan I often do an off-line scan which is not even mentioned in the microsoft docs article. I don't do the scans every day, though, only when I change passwords, check the backups, etc. Perhaps I can do fewer full scans, can't quite imagine not doing them at all

Work (Software Development) and running a few VMs. I rarely play games anymore and when I do, it'll usually be something like Blood or something else from the 90s/early 2000s.
