Will legacy scanner driver still work in 26H2?

By "monitor scanner" do you mean a colorimeter? That's a device used to profile or calibrate a monitor for critical photo or video work.
Hi Bobkn -
I guess you could call it that. It's from X-Rite.

If you have the original driver for that you can try running the installer in compatibility mode. Make sure you also right-click on the file and Run as Administrator. If that doesn't work, plan B. Extract the drivers in a folder and then try to force them from Device Manager. This should work.

Yep! X-Rite Devices>i1 Display. No Pro.
I wonder what it is? A Web search finds the I1Display with suffix LT, 2, Studio, Pro, or Pro Plus. (I own an i1Display Pro Plus.)

I'm don't understand your story. Are you trying to calibrate an old NEC monitor using the original software? You may face issues beyond drivers for your old X-Rite device.

It might help the discussion if you supply the model number of the monitor.

Ok. Around 2010, I purchased an NEC 24" MultiSync LCD2490WUXi2 HD Editing Monitor which included the X-Rite Sensor (for an extra charge), to edit images and videos. I used this monitor until June of 2023, when I purchased my current computer and new 27" EA271U-BK-B1(A) NEC 4K monitor to edit larger image files and 4K videos, but without the X-Rite sensor. I had called NEC, and they told me my old sensor and the same app would work just fine on the new monitor as well. It did work until this past year, until after a Windows update. I again called NEC, and was told the driver would no longer work, and that I would probably have to buy the newer sensor which comes with the driver software. Last time I looked, it was $239. That was before all the tariffs. I can't, and don't want to spend that kind of money, but since owning one of these monitors long-term, as they get older they no longer hold specification, and need some adjustments to extend their lifespan. So, while I would like the monitor to be calibrated, I am living with the fact I can no longer calibrate it. That is not my main start of this thread. I also have an old flat-bed Epson high-res scanner, and several years ago, I had to purchase a 3rd-party app called VueScan, just so I can use the scanner. I am quite gun-shy about going from 25H2 to 26H2, and then finding out my scanner no longer works after the update without some hefty investment on my part. I don't make enough out of these devices to warrant putting out large sums to get them working again, or replacing them, but I am able to supplement some income off them. I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced the loss of peripherals after updating to 26H2. That is the story.

Just a thought...How the calibration is done? Do you follow instructions from the application and change the monitor settings from the monitor controls? Or it is an advanced replacement for Windows default Color Management? If it is the first case, you just follow instructions, then you can temporarily use Windows 10 to calibrate the monitor and then switch to Windows 11 to use it. This can be done in many ways. One of them is to install Windows 10 on a virtual machine, such as VirtualBox or VMWare Player, and use it to calibrate the monitor. Another way is to install Windows 10 on a spare hard disk and use it temporarily to calibrate the monitor. A third option is to create a bootable USB flash drive with a live Windows system, such as Sergei Strelec WinPE, and boot into Windows 10 to calibrate the monitor. See link below:

PS: I found these instructions in Google AI. If this is how it is done, all you need is to run Windows 10 temporarily, create the ICC profile and save it on a USB flash drive. Then import it in Windows 11 and apply it. Much easier.

Calibrating Computer Monitors (e.g., i1Display / i1Pro with i1Profiler)
Display profiling aligns your monitor’s white point, luminance, and gamma to a predictable color space. [1]
    • Preparation: Warm up your display for 30 minutes, turn off auto-brightness or night-shift modes, and dim ambient room lighting. [1]
    • Placement: Hang or place the X-Rite/Calibrite colorimeter sensor flat against the target area of your illuminated screen, connected via USB to running profiling software (like i1Profiler). [1]
    • Measurement: The software flashes a series of test color and gray patches across the screen. The hardware sensor reads the emitted light values. [1]
    • Profile Generation: The utility adjusts the display hardware (or builds a correction lookup table) and saves a custom ICC color profile for your operating system

Yep! X-Rite Devices>i1 Display. No Pro.
If it helps, I have an X-Rite i1 Display Pro, and it works just fine under Windows 11 26H2 (26300.9550).

In fact, your post reminded me to refresh my display calibration. I use DisplayCal, as I find it simpler to use.

Hi Spapakons -
Thanks for all your research. I was sort of hoping for an easier fix than this, like checking or unchecking a box. I do know how to use the utility and device, as I have been doing so since around 2010. The NEC color management overrides the Windows color management. BTW, the app and this X-Rite sensor are proprietary to the monitor. (The app knows when a non-NEC monitor is attached.) When the Windows boots, one of the things is the app kicks in during startup and overrides the native color space. I can also trigger it by a shortcut I made on my desktop, to make sure it has been applied. I can, as I said, buy a later X-Rite sensor device, with a properly signed driver and get my ability to calibrate the monitor back, but due to expense, vs output income, it is not worth it. I am more interested in keeping my scanner alive, (which it is still under 25H2. and not having to buy a new one) for 26H2.

Hi Yearofthegoat -

Thanks. I would think your calibrator is newer than mine. Who knows, maybe mine will start working again under 2H62. My older Epson R280 printer software was not compatible with Windows 10, but worked quite well with Windows 11. I don't have to worry about my printers any more, though, as I recently purchased a new Epson Wifi ECOTANK printer that should be OK with the change.

Thanks for the detail about your monitor/colorimeter (post 27).

I haven't found what X-Rite model the NEC "custom" colorimeter was. I don't know whether it would work with third-party software.

The LCD2490WUXi2 has a programmable LUT, which means that you probably need Sharp/NEC proprietary software to use that.

I wonder which Windows 11 build rejected the colorimeter's drivers? ("Last year".)

Incidentally, windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 reportedly all use the same core code. In my ignorance, I'd expect software that ran under 24H2 to continue to work under 26H2.

Hi Bobkn -
Yeah, you'd think so, but I think it is more of a security update that created the problem. Apparently the signatures for the driver were signed under an old protocol, and it is not secure to the update I received. It is also possible that an update from NEC itself could have caused the problem. And, I don't think that it would work with 3rd-party software, either, as my X-Rite sensor is proprietary to NEC monitors. I got a deal back in 2010 when I got my first NEC monitor, as the X-Rite sensor was bundled with the monitor, over buying the monitor and buying the generic X-Rite sensor separately, at a higher cost.

Probably Microsoft changed the way USB functions in general. There were reports some update affected USB and Bluetooth compatibility. If you install the same update in 24H2 you also should face incompatibility issues. It not about 24H2 or 25H2 or 26H2, it is a specific update that changed some stuff and affected some devices.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. The fact that you have two 26H2 computers, and can run the scanner gives me hope. I still have the original software for my Epson Perfection Photo 3200 scanner. So, it hopefully will work for me, as well as the VueScan app. I purchased. Here's hoping!
Try disabling Core Isolation and after the reboot if necessary Microsoft Veritable Driver Blacklist. That worked for me and my 2003 Canon scanner driver was recognized, and the scanner works as it should. After that you can turn Core Isolation back on.

To restart in Test mode, hold the SHIFT key and restart the computer. Select Troubleshoot. Select Advanced Startup options. The computer will restart and give you a list of choices. Select to disable driver signature check (aka test mode). To restart normally after you have installed the drivers just restart and let Windows 11 load as usual.
Hi Spapakons -

Well, I had a chance to try Test Mode. I had it disregard driver signatures, and I was able to calibrate my monitor in the test mode. However, it would not record the results, so the calibration did not work. I restarted normally afterwards, and again, the app did not recognize the sensor, so unfortunately, that did not work! But from this we can ascertain it is definitely a signature problem. Any new ideas? Maybe an app that can resign the driver?

Just a minute, the sensor is only used through the application? Doesn't have any respective device in Device Manager to install the drivers for it in Test Mode? If it has no drivers but only used in the application, then you must use Windows 10 to create the ICC profile and then copy that profile in Windows 11 and set it as the default monitor profile. This should work. If it has a corresponding device in Device Manager, make sure the driver is installed in Test Mode. Once installed, the device will work fine with the unsigned driver when restarting normally. The signature check is done when installing or upgrading the drivers, not every time the device is used.

Yes, there are some tools for Developers to sign an unsigned driver, but I only used it once following a guide. I don't remember what it was and how I used it. Just Google it and maybe Google AI can guide you.

Hi Again, Spapakons -

Yes, the driver for the monitor is already installed and used to work with Windows 11 Pro until an update. I have an Epson scanner that worked with Win 11 Pro, run with 3rd-party VueScan, which also worked until the same update. I removed the update, got the scanner back to working, but not the sensor for calibrating the monitor. The driver for the monitor sensor only shows up in device manager when the USB is plugged in. I use this device every 6 months to calibrate the monitor, so it is not normally on and plugged in. Unfortunately, I am not a developer, and I just looked up how to sign a driver, even in test mode, and it looks quite daunting. Also, I would have to take NEC's driver and attempt to sign it. That may be some kind of legal complication. While I would like to keep things working thru the new 26H2 update, I have to weigh how much time and effort I would want to put into this, as opposed to buying a new monitor sensor, or even a scanner (with new drivers), or just trying to do without them. Some other members have written in on this thread, and said their devices still worked with 26H2, even with their original software. I am going to update to 26H2 today. Wish me luck. I will let you know how that works out. Thanks.
