Solved Win 11 24H2 Update Cleanup Issue


'2161 is all good, too! But I didn't check the DISM cleanup. But checks pass with flying colours.

Performed a new install off USB (not assisted). Ran into this bug. SxS and Software Distribution folders totally bloated and out of control - 8.63 gb showing up in update cleaner just like everyone else.

And just like everyone else tried everything from Admin Cleaner through DISM through all the other ideas and code hacks on here including safe boot and manually removing the Software Distribution files.

It's not "reserved storage". It's not expected behavior. It's not spec. WinDirStat is not mistaken. There really is a fluckton of unremovable file junk and e-waste in there.

Not gonna mince words. My time is valuable and I wish I could charge Microsoft my rates to get back the time I wasted on this issue over the last 2 weeks ... bug troubleshooting for free is not in my contract with Microsoft.

ELO, I can't blame you for not following all the information here regarding each issue, but some issues like the 8.63 GB space showing as used even after a cleanup are already fixed in the latest builds.

If I may just make a suggestion: Before getting yourself worked up , read the actual thread or do a simple search and you find information related to the issue at hand.

Yes, I'll admit that there are issues that need to be worked out. I'm not trying to make any excuses.

Also, by reading the available information both on this forum and all over the Internet you would have discovered the 8.63 GB used space is indeed simply a reporting error. The first time that you run cleanup it will in fact remove the majority of files but still report 8.63 GB space used. As noted, this issue is largely resolved although Microsoft has already stated that they are working to improve it even further.

One more thing: There will always, always, always be bugs. It is simply impossible to avoid. The trick is that we all need to educate ourselves as to what those are and understand the implications. If you run into a bug that you simply cannot live with, undo the update that introduced it.

Yeah, I get that this annoying, but it's a part of life. Cars break down, people, including our idols, will disappoint us, storms will come and go, and software will contain bugs. We don't live in a Utopia!

In disk cleanup, the is still 190mb under Windows update cleanup that I cannot delete. I running latest RP 24H2 (26100.2161)

I have tried to clean using this command, dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup and it goes up to 70% and then it says operation completed sucessfully.
