Pretty much what the title says. To link to MS account requires serial number, which I don't have.
I've tried the powershell an command prompt commands for fining the serial, but get no results.
I've also tried registering device with computer name. Doesn't work.

My computer has only a Local Account.

The reason for all this is that when I flash my BIOS to 5201, it breaks the activation.
Also.. the activation troubleshooter, doesn't help.

I'm not sure MS is still doing this but I recall having a similar problem after a BIOS update and having to call Microsoft and activating by telephone number pad. I didn't talk to a single soul. I simply followed the prompts. Sorry, that's all I got.

I don't want my MS acct. linked to Win 11
My reading of the tutorial & the related MSSupport article is that there is no other way of linking activation to an MSAccount [and hence getting MS help to re-activate after a hardware change].
I'm setting up two Windows 11 computers "soon" and I'll run through the procedures as I do so. I've been trying to spare the time for a couple of months now.

All the best,
Denis

mine and the wife's computers were linked to our MS accounts
we are both using local accounts on our systems

but recently there is no record of any linked computers on both of our accounts when checking on line
the reason i know this is that i saved bit locker disk encryption keys recently
now there are no active computers registered with each of our accounts.

reason unknown
best of luck Steve ..

@Bree may be able to advise but I am 99.999% certain that the only way (as an end user) to link your digital licence to your MS account is to login in with an MS account.

The only way round your dilemma that I know is to create a second local account, then change login to MS account for your first local account.

Then only login to second local account thereafter.

Just changing first account to MS account and then changing back to local account does not work as you lose the link to your MS account when you revert to a local account.

By leaving the first account as an MS account keeps the digital link BUT you will not see that link when you log in to second account.

If you choose to never use an MS account, then the link will never exist.

Hi Ghot. I posted a thread about this a couple of days ago. The same happened to me when I did a clean install of W11 on my daughter's laptop. She uses a MS Account. Her account no longer shows her laptop although Windows says Activated using Digital Licence linked to your Microsoft Ac.
I contacted MS and it was confirmed that it is a bug on their side and that "Engineers know about it and are working on it". A quick check shows reports of this from the middle of the year so I'm not sure what's going on.
Mitch.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.
29 Sept. 2026 Feature Update to 26H2 through Windows Update.

My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
I was afraid of that.

I'm gonna have to think seriously about whether I want to do that.
I must consider if the following is a workable solution...

I did note that.
I flashed the BIOS to 5201 about 3 weeks ago. And it broke the activation.

Fortunately, I could back-flash it to 5101.

I already did flash backwards once.
I live in a 72 unit building now. Flashing in any direction is risky.

That's why I made this topic. I'd like to keep flashing to a minimum, and only in the forward direction.

Pretty much what the title says. To link to MS account requires serial number, which I don't have.
I've tried the powershell an command prompt commands for fining the serial, but get no results.
I've also tried registering device with computer name. Doesn't work.

My computer has only a Local Account.

View attachment 153278

The reason for all this is that when I flash my BIOS to 5201, it breaks the activation.
Also.. the activation troubleshooter, doesn't help.

View attachment 153279
Manual Device Registration ONLY works with MS Hardware and your Activation is clearly NOT broken, the only thing apparently confusing you is that your machine is not showing in your MS account YET! Give it some time and you need to be logged in under your MS account not just for a few minutes ...More like days, weeks.

It's not broken now.
It was when I flashed the BIOS to 5201.
Windows 11 saw that as a new CPU.

In the first post, bottom picture, read the description of the 5201 BIOS.

I flashed it back to 5101, and all is well again.

Ha! A perfectionist at heart. I likely don't have to inform you that some BIOS upgrades are designed for specific configurations and that getting the latest BIOS isn't always a good idea. Perhaps this is one of those scenarios. You would know better than me. I'm sure you have your reasons.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
