Win10 Pro to Win11 using windows update?

I just enabled TPM 2.0 on this 8th gen Intel machine, also went from 8gb to 32gb memory, Microsoft says it's ready, will windows update work eventually, or should I use ISO to install?

24H2 had some issues with WD SSDs, do not think mine was affected, firmware up to date. maybe that is why 24H2 never installed, until I installed with in-place accidently.

Old 9th gen desktop still running in US, updated to 24H2 and working well.
Do a search for updates to see if it is offered. If not give it a few days and WU should offer it. I strongly suggest anyone upgrading to make a system image first.
You can also use the installation assistant (first option here) Or download the iso( 3rd option) mount it, and run setup.exe inside it.

The PC Healthcheck just checks the minimum requirements for upgrading from 10 to 11.

There are many other parameters that are checked during an upgrade:

a) partition free space in each default partition
b) safeguard holds
c) users
d) drivers
e) antivirus
f) BIOS
etc.

That was one of the original reasons for TargetReleaseVersion (force an upgrade to a specific version of Windows, when it became available).

But AppCompat checks still apply. If your HW fails requirements or your PC has a known GatedBlockID, then no upgrade will happen until the conditions are cleared from the registry.

I believe most people aren't paying full attention to Brink's tutorial:

This tutorial will show you how to specify a TargetReleaseVersion version of Windows 11 you want to move to or stay on in Windows Update until it reaches end of service in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education.

Windows Update keeps Windows 11 updated by automatically downloading and installing the latest updates, drivers, and hotfixes released by Microsoft.

Feature updates are released annually. Feature updates add new features and functionality to Windows 11. Because they are delivered frequently (rather than every 3-5 years), they are easier to manage.

The TargetReleaseVersion policy allows you to specify which feature update version of Windows 11 you would like your computer to move to and/or stay on until the version reaches end of service or you reconfigure this policy.

If you don't update this policy before the device reaches end of service, the device will automatically be updated once it is 60 days past end of service for its version.

If you specify a TargetReleaseVersion the same as the current version, Windows 11 will stay on this version until it reaches end of service.

If you specify a TargetReleaseVersion higher than the current version, Windows 11 will directly update only to the specified version even if a higher version is available.

How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2)

Remember though, you must remove the target release version after a successful upgrade - else you'll never be offered 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

Yes, if you wait for Windows Update to do its automatic check then it can take up to a day. Windows Update will by default check every 22 hours (minus a random factor). You could have speeded it up by clicking 'Check for updates'.
