Win11 24H2 Installed, now no network sharing

Thx. I'm bugeyed looking for a solution. I'm at the point where i wanna say heck with it
The first thing I'd do is to try turning Windows Defender Firewall off temporarily to see if that resolves it.

Yeah windiws defender is disabled. I did turn off all eset and it's the same. My w11 pc not visible in explorer when I click network. Windiws 10 pc is fine. Other win11 pc not visible til. I input \\pcname in network bar. Share is then visible till I close window. When I open explorer again other win11 pc is gone and my pc is still not visible. It's mind boggling and makes no sense
All mapped drives are fine

Hi,

May I suggest you restart on the target machine (the disappearing one)
1- Function Discovery Provider Host service, it will take down another service with it.

Then on your current machine; only if you feel confident to do so:
2- In CMD, Ping the system you can't see, grab the IP address and add it to the hosts file in

Code:
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc

Notepad can be used to open that file.

Add:

IPV4 address pcname (the one you can't see)
ie: 192.168.1.120 oatpci

Save File.

I have the opposite issue. The Win11 machines show up in NETWORK, but two WIN10 machines are MIA. However, I can ping them all, and I can map drives by just running \\<computer-name> and all the shared drives on that machine are visible. The machine still doesn't appear in NETWORK, but I have access. Since the WIN10 machines will soon be gone, I'm just going to ignore it until they are replaced, I've wasted too much time on this already.

The bummer is that this functionality has been buggy since Windows XT, so it's not like Microsoft hasn't had 25 years to figure this out!

It works. For my machines anyway. (2 physicals and 4 VMs, 2 Win/2 Linux)

For obvious reasons, you want a static IP. Ideally, you would set that at the router but you can disable DHCP.

As the screenshot below shows, even on a VM, the machines on the network do show.

I have my devices set to static IPs within the device settings. Same with Windows PCs the IP is set on the PC not at the router. Using this method should I set them in the router instead or can I just leave them as they are?

Damn, I'm actually learning something new!

You can set a static either way, both of them are valid methods.
I even mix them in my setup, whatever suits your needs.
With a laptop, switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, it might be better to set it at the router though.

Personally, I think having the reservation at the router is the best way to go. In any case, if you're going to set a static IP address without a router reservation, make sure it's outside the range of the DHCP IP pool.

Pretty bad when Microsoft makes a change that even a network engineer has to seek help to fix. I swear if I wasn't so old and set in my ways I would learn how to use Linux and leave Wondowz behind.

If adding it to the hosts file works PLEASE let us know and I'll do it here.
Well for me it did not work. UGH W11 24H2 v26100.3476

I suspect there's more than one issue in play here. Some people can't see other Win11 machines, and at least in my case, it's Win10 machines that don't show up. That seems to suggest a subtle difference in what is going on.

Sorry I can't help you as there is no way for me to see how your machines are set up.
As mentioned above, I don't have that issue so I really can't relate.

Mine are setup the same as the tutorial too, have been ever since I can remember. It's all related to 24H because that's when things went crazy here. As soon as I restored 23H everything was perfect again. Strange that some here don't have an issue at all with 24H and networking. Wish I was that lucky!

So I'll just keep using my shortcuts for the devices that don't show up in network explorer till I find a fix. :(
