Win11 goes into unwakeable sleep after the last update

The computer wakes up when the mouse button is pressed, but does not wake up when the mouse is moved?
If "yes", set different intervals for the display and sleep. And move the mouse after turning off the display.

# Sleep Timeout (40_CURRENT and 15_CURRENT) & Display (30_CURRENT and 10_CURRENT)
C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.e xe /SETACVALUEINDEX SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP STANDBYIDLE 900
C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe -change -monitor-timeout-ac 10
C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe /SETACTIVE SCHEME_CURRENT

Worth noting before I reply to the points below that when I left the PC last night, I did Win+L as usual. When I came back to it today, it was asleep, ie nothing obvious happening, and the fans were off. As soon as I tickled the keyboard, it woke up just as it always used to do.

No idea if something has changed, or it was a one-off.

On the "Details" tab, the "Power Data" property will show both the supported sleep states (D0-D5) of the device and how these states correspond to machine sleep states (S0-S5).
I'm not altogether sure what all this info means, so I'll post a screenshot for you to see. As I mentioned, I have a keyboard and two mice attached, but all show exactly the same thing in this tab, so I've only shown one. I also did a bit of editing to fit all the info onto one screenshot.

-DEVICEENABLEWAKE Enables the device function that brings the system out of sleep mode.
Usage: POWERCFG -DEVICEENABLEWAKE <device_name >

# List the devices that are already are configured to wake up the system from any sleep state.
PS E:\Temp> powercfg -DEVICEQUERY wake_armed
Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller
HID-compliant mouse
HID Keyboard Device
Thunderbolt(TM) Controller - 9A1B
When I ran that command, I got he following...

Intel(R) I211 Gigabit Network Connection
HID Keyboard Device
HID-compliant mouse (001)
HID-compliant mouse (002)

If you have S0, make a report
powercfg /SleepStudy /output E:\Sleepstudy-report.html
Not sure what you mean by "If you have S0", but I did a report anyway, which I've attached.

I have everything turned off.
When I ran "powercfg -waketimers" I got the following...

Timer set by [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files\Macrium\Common\MacriumService.exe (MacriumService) expires at 02:00:00 on 18/01/2023.

I have Macrium Reflect Free running, and it's set to do a disk image every morning at 2am. No idea if that is affecting anything.

Thanks again for all the help.

The computer wakes up when the mouse button is pressed, but does not wake up when the mouse is moved?
Nope. When the issue happens, no amount of moving, clicking, bashing or shouting at the keyboard or either mouse works.

"BIOS has been reset. Please re-config your BIOS setup items if needed."

This implies to me that something has changed the BIOS without my knowledge. Whatever it is seems to have disabled AMD-V twice in the past week (never having done it before), and may also have done something to prevent the mouse and keyboard waking up the PC.

Bingo. There is a setting in there somewhere that will allow for enabling USB wakeup from sleep. Finding it is going to be a matter of checking your user guide / user manual for your motherboard / system, which should have it listed *somewhere*.

Keep monitoring it - but yeah, it definitely sounds like your BIOS got reset for some odd reason. Normally, that is because of a BIOS update - but perhaps Windows entered a state it could not recover from, somehow, or else something else happened, like a system utility from the manufacturer did something.

I rebooted and hit the Del key to go into the BIOS, and it came up with a message saying "BIOS has been reset. Please re-config your BIOS setup items if needed."
As has been noted many times (despite what some naysayers say) when you update a BIOS it resets to its default settings, and thus why it is recommended in the BIOS update instructions to "Load Optimized Defaults" after an update. Additionally, any customized BIOS settings you had will need to be reapplied. Also, even clearing the CMOS will reset the BIOS so....

It is also important to insure you get the correct BIOS for your particular board. A version 1.0 board's BIOS may be totally different from a version 1.x board, so make sure you choose the correct board version before downloading drivers and BIOS updates!

All that said, I don't know if that'll solve your problem, but the BIOS reset is a fact. And I've been using Gigabyte boards since 2005. And have one now as seen in my system specs.

    This is my backup system.
However, when I tried to run the updater (Efiflash.exe) I got a message saying that I needed a 64-bit version. However, the download page doesn't seem to make any distinction, so I'm not sure how to upgrade, or if I should even try.
Did you get the correct BIOS version for your board? Additionally, there's zero need to use Efiflash. Simply drop the BIOS update files on a flash drive, pug in and use Q-Flash from the BIOS to update it. Simple.

And again, make sure you get the correct BIOS for the board version.

Bingo. There is a setting in there somewhere that will allow for enabling USB wakeup from sleep. Finding it is going to be a matter of checking your user guide / user manual for your motherboard / system, which should have it listed *somewhere*.
You would think so, but I haven't been able to find it.

Were you able to get the AMD-V enabled for your VMs again?
Yup, just re-enabled it, and the VMs worked fine.

Sounds like whatever other changes in the BIOS you made to re-enable the VMs also fixed this?
I only made the one change, so I would be very surprised if that fixed the problem. However, I'm beginning to suspect that I have a gremlin sitting inside my PC, making random changes whenever he thinks I'm getting to complacent, so anything is possible!

As has been noted many times (despite what some naysayers say) when you update a BIOS it resets to its default settings, and thus why it is recommended in the BIOS update instructions to "Load Optimized Defaults" after an update. Additionally, any customized BIOS settings you had will need to be reapplied. Also, even clearing the CMOS will reset the BIOS so....

snip

And again, make sure you get the correct BIOS for the board version.
I haven't updated the BIOS for some time. As I said earlier, I'm not sure how I got a BIOS version that doesn't appear on the manufacturer's page, especially since I kept a link to that page as the source.

Either way, the BIOS has been working fine for ages. It's only since early last week that I had problems with both the AMD-V being disabled and the PC not waking up.

However, as both are now working, I'm just hoping that my gremlin has gone away for good.

Thanks again to everyone for all the replies.

Sigh, having behaved itself for a few weeks, it did it again just now.

To summarise, I haven't touched the BIOS, as I'm still not sure how I got the version I have, and whether the version shown on the web site is the right one for me or not. Plus, it was all working fine until that short spate four weeks ago when the PC suddenly started doing this. It inexplicably stopped doing it about a week later, and has been fine for three weeks. In all that time I haven't touched the BIOS (other than what has been mentioned above), so I'm not sure if that is the issue.

However, I am no expert, and am willing to accept any advice you can give.

Thanks

I suggest you re-install the display driver in case it has been corrupted.
Display driver corruption can affect sleep.
Reinstalling the display driver used to be the top suggestion in Windows 7 Help for sleep problems.
And I think you said that the problem did not happen in Safe mode / after a Clean boot. That can also point to a driver problem [and away from a Bios problem].

@Try3 Well, it seems to have worked so far. I tried letting the PC sleep and then tickling the mouse, and it worked. Even worked when I left it overnight.

I realised (too late) last night. Yesterday, I installed ESET Anti-Virus on the PC, and the time it wouldn't wake up was the first time it had gone to sleep after that. I wonder if that had anything to do with it? If so, re-installing the video driver may not have addressed the issue (unless ESET mucked up the video driver, which seems unlikely).

Any thoughts? Thanks again.

I don't know anything about Eset. After poor experiences with Bitdefender & some of the others a few years ago, I am suspicious of anything other than the built-in Defender.
But I agree that Eset shouldn't have affected the video driver.

Did you make a system image before installing Eset?
- If so I suggest you restore that image.
- If not then it would be interesting to see if uninstalling it [then running their specialist removal tool, if they provide one on their website] avoids the problem.

Best of luck,
Denis

@Try3 I have Macrium Reflect doing a disk image every night, so I could revert, but I think I'll try ESET's support first. I've been using them for 15+ years, not have any problems, and found their support to generally very good, so worth asking first.

Thanks
