win10 64 bit 20h2 ver. now it is 22h2
my sister called and told me she can't get her pc online. she said the lower right of the task bar is gone no clock no battery no hidden items arrow no internet icon no speaker icon. so i tried to talk her into doing a right click on the taskbar and when the settings popped up to type in reset and go to reset and she said that does not happen.

so i tried to get her to use the menu and find the gear and click it and go then type in reset in the input field and go to reset and she did not get that gear icon to go anyplace.

so either she is just daf or she may have found a virus. so could a virus cause all this BS? it seems to me these setting are default items. i even tried to get her to to task manager and stop everything and she said that did not come up either.

Are you able to get her to run a browser via search, get her on the internet to do a scan?
Win + S type in edge.
Does she have antivirus software, can you guide her to open that via search?

Did she try to install something?

For what it’s worth, if she can open search then she can probably open a command prompt:

  • Get her to open search on her PC (Win+S) and type CMD, right click on CMD and “Open as admin”
  • Get her to type these in and run them one at a time into CMD. Press enter (make sure she enters the spaces)
“CheckHealth" "ScanHealth" and "RestoreHealth" and you want to use them in that order
Patience is needed.

CheckHealth

  • Open the Command Prompt (CMD) as administrator.
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

ScanHealth

  • Open the Command Prompt (CMD) as administrator.
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Finally, RestoreHealth

  • Open the Command Prompt (CMD) as administrator
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Running reset straight away may be overkill. She could do the wrong thing and lose everything.

I’d try the above command prompts first?
You may be able to fix it. Reset is fine but everything is lost, an in-place upgrade is better.

i gave up i was talking to her husband and he is worse trying to work with than she is. i will get it tomorrow and get it going in person. we both have win11 running and i did the same steps i told him to do and when i told him what is was looking at he had no clue. they are daf with pcs. they just about know how to turn them on. but i was hoping i could take him into a reset. thanks i will let you know tomorrow when i get it what i did. again thanks

yes i know but i have backup of about a month ago so they will not lose everything. i may be able to do a restore and not a reset. what i was hoping was if he could get to that point i could get him over to restore at a minimum.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth repairs corruption in the WinSxS component store, downloading new copies if necessary. But it doesn't do anything to the system files.

sfc /scannow scans for corruption in the system files, replacing corrupted ones with fresh copies from the component store.

If the component store is healthy, then sfc /scannow is sufficient on its own, using both is a 'belt and braces' approach that should fix most things. If that fails, then the next step before a Reset would be to attempt an in-place repair install.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

ok guys i got the pc and it seems to be in need of a complete reinstall of the OS. the keyboard is not working no icons in the lower right of the screen the mouse is not working. it will not show me the downloads no files show.




it may be no usb ports are working at this time i'm in the bios and running the tests i started memort and it started at 20 minutes. that seems real long for a memory test. but i will run all the available tests in that page and then move on. win+s does not come up i tried to run an internal reset and that failed.
