Win11_23H2_EnglishInternational_x64v2.iso - why when I download this, mount it and click on Setup.exe as administrator does it refuse to do anything?

That's true.
You do a Repair install from within Windows i.e. you boot normally then disconnect all non-essential hardware, mount the ISO and run its Setup.exe.

Is the ISO mounting OK?
Can you post a screenshot showing the mounted ISO's root folder including its Setup.exe file? You might as well include the whole File explorer window so everything can be seen and considered.
Posting that ought to remove any doubt that the problem is merely a procedural error.

In that case, I suggest you concentrate on finding other threads about people having problems leaving the Insider programme.
Once that's resolved you can consider restoring a system image.

All the best,
Denis
But I'm NOT on it - if I try to "leave", it says my email address is nor enrolled on it.

Have also spent months searching the Internet for this, as well as the other problems. Also weeks trying all sorts of things with drivers - all updates of drivers, everything in Armoury Crate and Bios, "test to destructions almost" tests that take days.....Also sfc /scannow and DISM...

I also reported it on the Feedback Hub and got no response
"Green Screen of Death from Insider program, but I'm not enrolled on the Insider program!
Occasionally, for the last few months, I've been getting this on shutting down the computer - Unexpected kernel Mode Trap.
How can I get messages from the Insider program if I'm not enrolled on it? If I go to Unenroll and put in my outlook address (my logon), it says I'm not on the program!"

Hi Denis - here's the screenshot

Thanks.
I think it removes any doubt that there is anything wrong before the setup.exe runs.
The ISO is clearly mounted and its Setup.exe looks right.
Here's mine

and here's the install.esd from the Sources folder [you might have Install.wim as it depends on how it was made]

An idea
0 Preps - make a new system image, backup drivers, backup your own files.
1 Run a clean install using that USB.
2 Restore a system image from before you enrolled i.e. before any problems started.
3 Run a Repair install just to prove it now runs.

A question for anybody knowledgeable about the Insider programme:-

Does being on the Insider programme prevent a 'normal' ISO's Setup.exe running?

Denis
My guess is that the OS sees this as a a retrograde step. Isn't the inside version number a higher one?

It's so long ago, Denis, that I don't know when it was. I SUPPOSE I could do that and pick a random backup from months ago - the problem is it happens so infrequently that I'd have to wait ages to find out. Also, if i restore a backup, won't i replace 23H2 with 22H2 from the backup?

I just had another thought.
Sorry but I'm pushed for time today and have not re-read the thread to check if you have already tried these tests.
Have you checked whether or not the problem is confined to your current user account?
Have you checked whether or not the problem occurs in Safe mode?

My guess is that the OS sees this as a a retrograde step. Isn't the inside version number a higher one?
You're probably right but if that was all the problem was I'd expect the setup.exe to run albeit awkwardly.

the problem is it happens so infrequently that I'd have to wait ages to find out
Yes, that's awkward.

if i restore a backup, won't i replace 23H2 with 22H2 from the backup
Yes but then you'd just run the 23H2 ISO as a Repair install and that will update you to 23H2.
And I would also suggest restoring device drivers in one fell swoop. Back them up now and restore them after the system image restoration.
Backup and Restore Device Drivers - ElevenForumTutorials
I don't think it would hurt to get the latest video drivers from the computer / video card maker so you can uninstall the current one completely then install the newest one.

Would the hypothetical insider version number not show up on my own version?
Just to avoid any misunderstandings, I do not know enough about Insider affairs to understand that statement.

@Bree - Do you understand Tom's Insider/NotInsider state and any consequences that might be affecting his ability to run a Repair install?

Sorry for jumping on the thread without reading all the posts on it.
Just noticed that the folders creation date is 04/12/2023. This can be April 12 or December 04.
If it is April 12 it must be Win 11 22h2 and as the computer may have been updated to a newer version (Win 11 23h2) a repair install with an old version just doesn't work.

Luiz,

a repair install with an old version just doesn't work
But the setup.exe will still run if a Repair install is done using an older version.
It will merely limit the choices available - it will not allow keeping existing apps or data.

Just noticed that the folders creation date is April 12 -2023 so it must be a Win 11 22h2
The OP is, like me, in the UK.
Assuming Tom has a normal British installation, his dates are listed as dd/mm/yyyy i.e. 04/12/2023 is 4th December 2023.

I'm saying - do the 22H2 image restoration and only then do the 23H2 Repair install.
That way you end up with 223H2.

So either try my idea or try Bree's suggested script.
Bree is highly competent.

You might then make a new system image before testing.
You might wish to consider these possibly extreme ideas in order to test the new system.
No, see Bree's suggestion instead. MS's department SysInternals is highly respected.

Best of luck,
Denis

Hi Denis, I’ve no idea when I enrolled and unenrolled. I’ve already gone back about 6 months restoring backups and still get the green screen. If I go back much further, it’ll be quite a mess in terms of data and programmes.
I’m waiting to hear from Bree exactly how to get to the uninstall option - I don’t want to risk enrolling myself again by accident!
