my scroll bars are so narrow i can barely see them. i have seen winaero recommended on several sites to fix this. does it work? is it safe? thanks!

Winaero seems to be well-liked around here, but if you just want to change the scroll bar width, you can do it without a 3rd-party tool.

i used to be able to do it thru the registry, but that no longer works. i think firefox is the culprit, but i'm not sure.

Winaero can do a lot of things really easily and done well. Scroll bar width is only one of them.

Google AI can walk you through changing the setting using about:config as per dacrone.
Just Ask I am running Firefox in Windows 11 can you advise me on widening the scroll bars please?
I am relatively new to Firefox was a long time Opera user and Google has helped me customise Firefox a lot.

Winaero changes the Windows scrollbar width. Universally, no, not all scrollbars are enlarged.
The Windows scrollbar width setting mainly affects applications that use the native Windows scrollbar metrics (the values exposed through Windows accessibility/UI settings). Whether a third-party app follows that setting depends entirely on how the app draws its scrollbar. Firefox does not use Windows metrics since all its customization is handled by its own configuration.

Here's a video released in 2026 that says it can be done in Firefox about:config Whether it works or not I can not guarantee.

Note that were you to get a copy of Winaero's tweaker, it has a useful search feature.

As glasskuter says, it's focussed on Windows- no 3rd party programs.

It seems you're concerned about FF scrollbars exclusively, not ones in Windows' dialogues.

Winaero's search offers no results for Firefox, which rather answers part of your question.

I agree that FF 157 on Win 11 has a much narrower scroll bar than v157 on Win 10 (comparing two laptops with 14.1" screens).

Note that you can of course scroll by other means e.g. touchpad scroll, mouse scroll, and clicking the middle button on the mouse and moving the mouse pointer.

Tried this:

Search for widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override.
(If it does not exist, select Number, type the name, and click the + (plus) or create button).

Set the size value to your preferred width in pixels (for example, 16, 20, or 30).

- it doesn't work as described.

By default it's zero. Setting any non-zero number changes the entire bar to black, a fixed with, but the actual slider remains the same.

open firefox and in the address bar write (please copy and paste)

about:config

when this windows opens click 'i accept the risks' warning

in the about:config window copy and paste this into the search bar

widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override

the default value will be set to 0
click on this default 0 value and change it to 30

you may have to restart firefox for it to take effect
you can change to an higher or lower value to suit your required needs
this will reset the scrollbar width across all settings for firefox.

As I said- I tried that.. got a wider black bar down the side but the scroll button remained the same width.

Here is a picture of my Firefox 157.0 scroll bar (with NOVA disabled)...

And here is a picture with NOVA enabled... with NOVA enabled or disabled.. my scroll bar width is the same.
The pics are different sizes and show up a bit differently on this forum.

In about:config I have this set to "0"...
widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style = 0

For the Windows scroll bars, I have it set like this in the registry...
