Winareo Tweaker fails to launch

I did a fresh install of Winareo Tweaker and the hour glass appears for a couple of seconds and it fails to launch. Not sure what's going on.

Anybody know why this is happening?

Check it's not blocked, right click the executable and see if there's an option to unblock it.

Have you tried right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting 'Run as administrator?

I have the portable version (v1.64.2.0) and that launces fine.

Yeah, looks like that one did it although I don't see why I have to run as an administrator. 🤷‍♂️ I didn't have to on my other machine.

Windows 11 UAC foibles.
Within Win Aero (WA) UI you can create 'Elevated' shortcuts so that they bypass User Account Control. If you want to do this open WA and navigate to 'Shortcuts' and select 'Elevated short cut'.
Then find the 'Target' (The WA exe file) and select it.
Then enter the shortcut 'Location' (Your desktop).
Then click on 'Create elevated shortcut' and a new shortcut icon will appear on your desktop.
Try the new shortcut icon before deleting the original shortcut.

Yeah I ticked the "Run as administrator" box in the right-mouse-click --> properties so it will always open as an administrator. I set it like that for things like CMD and Powershell, but never for Winaero before. I should be able to run it as a standard user but in this case, I guess not.

I'm having the same issue with Ver 1.64.1. I used Revo and CCleaner to ensure all previous installations were completely removed.

Running as Administrator, nothing happens.

I'll see if I can find an earlier version.

So can someone explain why suddenly Windows Security is suddenly flagging Winareo as this trojan please? Just started this morning even though I installed this version weeks ago. This is why it won't open for anyone starting this morning.

false + version 1.63 works fine.

But why suddenly out of the blue???? As I said I've been running that version for quite some time now without issue till suddenly this morning the warning is popping up. Plus I like the added features of the current version and don't want to roll back.


What I'm asking is was this a bug from a Windows Update, Security Update, is it safe to and can it be allowed to run?

Yes it is probably a bug. I have been using that tool for as long as I remember. If you read back through the thread you will see that the same ting happened to me just this morning. It was not flagged in 26200.7701. It is safe to use. Just stop it from updating to 1.64.2.

Personally, I set Defender to allow it to run, as I concur, it is a false positive.

I'm thinking along those lines as I've been running ver 1.64.2 for a while now so it must be a new Windows Security update triggering the warning.

Per Co-Pilot - Winaero Tweaker 1.64.2 is likely triggering a Trojan:Win32/Pomal!rfn warning due to a false-positive detection caused by aggressive heuristics in recent Windows Defender updates, rather than an actual infection. The tool's ability to modify system-level settings often causes antivirus software to misidentify it as a threat.

I installed WT 1.64.2 back on Dec 11. Frankly, the only thing I use it for is to change the default weight of some of the system fonts to semi-bold. It makes things in the menus a bit easier to read. Just these:
