Windows 10 clients unable to save a file on windows 11 server

My old windows 10 clients cannot save or update files on my new windows 11 computer. This occurs whether I am opening an existing docx file (refuses the save) or trying to create a new file (any format, not just Office.) When I open a file in Word, it shows as read-only.

I've gone through all the articles and AI suggestions, and revised all sorts of things, rebooted , etc. with no results.

I also have a windows 11 laptop and it can do saves to the new windows 11 machine without a problem.

Any ideas?

This part is confusing me. What exactly are you trying to do? I am assuming you're trying to save from a Windows 10 PC over the network to a Windows 11 PC? Secondarily, telling us you 'tried everything' without being more specific, isn't that helpful. Did you set the networks on both systems to private?

Sorry if I was vague here. Yes, I am trying to create a file on a Windows 10 PC and save it on the Windows 11 PC (I'm also unable to update an existing file but I left that out).

How are you logging into the other PC on the network? This seems like a permission or authentication issue.

Both computers are logged in with the same name and password. I don't use a Microsoft account. Given that the Win 10 systems can see the files on the Win 11 drive, I think we are past authentication issues. But when I try to save a file it simply declines to do anything, and when I open a Word doc from the Win 11 system on the Win 10, it says read-only but shows the entire file.

I suspect it might be SMB permissions.

Make sure that Private Network, Network Discovery, and File/Printer Sharing are turned on for the Windows 10 system.

Also, in Windows Features, make sure that all SMB 1.0 references are unchecked.

Reboot after making any changes.

Did you mean unchecked for SMB 1.0???

I found that one was checked and one was not. So I made them all unchecked, then rebooted the win10 system.

No change. Still shows as read only.

Is the matching Windows 10 account on the Windows 11 system in the same user group(s) as the matching accounts from the other systems that work?

On Windows 11, check in Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Users

Right click on the User name, select Properties, then Member Of tab.

Additionally, if you used "Give access to" > "Advanced sharing" for the matching Windows 10 account, you need to check permissions for the user for that shared location.

In both cases I use jpullam as my logon and it is a member of the administrators group.

And I don't use give access to.

The fact that it happens on any program that I use on the Win 10 system (and I actually have a second Win 10 system with the same problem) makes me think that there is some rule that precludes writing but allows reading.

HOW TO SHARE FILE ,FOLDER, or DRIVE USING ADVANCED SHARING

Right-click on the folder you want to share and select Properties.
Go to the Sharing tab.
Click on Advanced Sharing
Check the Share box
Select Permissions
Under Group or other users, select the users or groups you want to share the folder with. I choose EVERYONE. (If Everyone is not listed type Everyone in the box and click ADD)
Set their permission level (Full Control, Change, or Read only).
Click Apply and OK

Which is describing permissions...

I have Windows 10 systems working with Windows 11 systems, and vice versa.

Try creating a new account on both the non-working Windows 10 client, and the Windows 11 system.

On the Windows 11 system, right click on a folder you want to give the "new user" permissions to, select Security, add the new user, and grant the permissions for that folder.
