Solved Windows 10 update fails at 97% every time.

You should be able to find a way to disable that. I seem to recall Nvidia's update is independent of Windows Update.

To stop Nvidia driver updates, you can disable automatic updates within the Nvidia app or GeForce Experience under the preferences/settings menu. To prevent Windows from overriding your choice, disable driver updates in Device Installation Settings, edit Group Policy to "do not include drivers with Windows updates", or uninstall GeForce Experience and update manually.

I tried installing the Nvidia driver first and it bricked my display. What steps can I take to recover please?

See if you can use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to clean install the Nvidia GPU driver nvlddmkm.sys:

According to the MSI instructions for BIOS updating, they say not to update the BIOS unless the existing version is causing problems. Do you still think I should do it anyway?

Regarding the Nvidia display driver, again I question whether I really need to downgrade from the current version to the 2017 version given that the current version seems to be working fine? Were the hangs/freezes errors you mentioned constant or just a one-off event?

Also, since recovering the system to the image taken before updating Windows yesterday using Reflect, Windows claims it can find no new updates and update history shows the 2 updates that were installed yesterday morning. I assume this is because the download/successful install record is kept in the cloud. If I go into uninstall updates, they are shown there as available to uninstall which in theory should be impossible because the image I rolled back to was created roughly 2 hours before the updates were supposedly installed. Should I try uninstalling them and then let Windows reinstall them?

I ran Event Viewer and there are plenty of errors shown, but none for anything to do with Nividia. TBH, I have never known the Event Viewer to be clean of errors, even on my regular laptop. With the MSI open at the moment, everything seems to be working normally. Is there some tool that would allow me to see any issues with the current Nvidia graphics?

BTW, you didn't answer me as to whether I should still update the BIOS? My main concern is that if I brick the machine, I'm not sure how to recover it, unless Reflect also backs up the BIOS, and as the old saying goes "If it ain't broken, don't fix it."

Thanks for looking into this for me.
The info you provided suggests that the Nvidia driver has been replaced with the old 2017 version although I do not know how that could be possible seeing as I was forced to recover the system by restoring the Reflect image taken on 04/28. Indeed, the unexpected shutdown was caused by the screen going completely black after attempting to install the older graphics driver.

Nonetheless, the machine appears to be running well at the moment.

The reliability monitor showed plenty of issues in the last few days although the only issue today, which has appeared every day, is the failure and stopping of the Microsoft Xbox Game Bar. I don't use an Xbox and I certainly don't need a game bar. Although the info claims it is a startup item, I have been unable to find it. I can, however, see it as an installed app, so I'm wondering whether a simple uninstall will solve the problem?

Please make a new backup image.
Do you mean a new Reflect image?

I have backed up the drivers. Although the latest Nvidia driver was automatically downloaded, I did not click on the install button, so I'm still running the older version, but it won't allow me access to settings or dashboard.

Make sure you have taken appropriate action to prevent it being updated.
I can't

Then I suggest you do some research on how Nvidia updates, and hack it- e.g. rename the appropriate exe file, disable the scheduled task, or set an appropriate firewall rule.

Since disabling the Killer Network service the app is no longer shown as being available to uninstall. The only one remaining is the Killer Intelligence Center. As Windows manages network functionality, do I even need to have any Killer apps at all?

I tried restarting again after disabling the Killer Network service. This time, reliability monitor threw a hissy fit!
