So last month I still wasn't getting 22H2 in Windows Update so I went to the local group policy editor to select the target feature update. That made 22H2 show up, it downloaded and restarted but it failed to install at the end and rolled back its changes. Now it refuses to show up again in Windows Update. I also checked and there don't seem to be any blocks on my system (RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5800X).
Steps I've tried:
1. Run sfc /scannow
2. Disconnected all external drives
3. Uninstalled Primocache and MWB
4. Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter
5. Ran the bat file from this forum
Last resort is an in-place upgrade with the ISO but trying to avoid that if I can.

Windows Update will not offer the 22H2 feature update if it thinks your PC has failed the compatibility tests.

Open Regedit and go to:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperinceIndicators

Here you should find a number of keys, one for each target version that has been tested. The one for 22H2 is named NI22H2 (the code name for 22H2 was Nickel). 21H2 was CO21H2 (Cobalt).

Only if the RedReason value in NI22H2 says 'none' will you be offered 22H2 in Windows Update, otherwise RedReason may list one or more incompatibilities. If so, check that none of them apply (eg. TPM turned off) then delete the NI22H2 key. Windows Update will then re-run the compatibility assessment. hopefully it will pass and you'll be offered 22H2 again.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Yup, it actually does say "None" for that value. At a loss now, perhaps I'll wait and see if it shows up this Patch Tuesday, otherwise I might do the upgrade install with the ISO but I hope that won't cause even more issues.

Clicking 'Check fr updates' may make it appear. Also, look in Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates in case it's hiding there.

The end result is the same, but the installation assistant works more like an upgrade through Windows Update than using the ISO. The files it downloads to do the upgrade are temporary and removed after the upgrade completes. With the ISO you get to keep the ISO for possible re-use later (or again if the upgrade has problems).

The total download and time it takes should be about the same ether way. I'd recommend the ISO.

I decided to upgrade install with the ISO anyway and it went through without a hitch. Now it's downloading updates. I guess this is basically the same as getting the update the "proper" way eh?
