Windows 11 Annoyances

This used to happen to me when I had two instances of explorer (files) open, clicking on the taskbar wouldn't open any files,
Come to think of it, that's usually when the issue occurs for me. And yes, clicking the taskbar does nothing - you have to close/minimize the screen you're on to see the screen you clicked from the taskbar.

Very annoying when it happens.

All of your open explorer windows are there to see when you hover over the explorer icon you put on task bar, you can make your choice from there.

If the explorer icon is what you are talking about, if not disregard my reply :)

Yeah, I'm aware of that, I use that function a lot. But no, that's not it.

An example of the issue would be something like if I had Windows Explorer open along with Word and Outlook. If I'm working in Explorer and need to get back into Outlook, I'd click Outlook icon (the app is already open but hidden since it isn't the active app) from the taskbar and it would become the active window.

The bug is if more than one instance of Explorer is open it can cause the other open apps not to come to the forefront (become viewable). Here clicking the icon appears to do nothing, when in fact it does bring up the app, but it is effectively hidden behind the current active screen you wanted to leave; now you'll have to either close or minimize the screen/app you're in to see the app you clicked from the taskbar.

Though the issue is random it occurs enough to become an annoyance as I'm one to have several windows and apps open at any given time.

Hope this clarifies.

So you`re saying if you had 3 programs open along with more than 1 instance of explorer, and hovered over 1 of their icons on the taskbar, the small window that appears for that particular program does not show up and you can`t click on that window to bring it to the top ?

Hope I`m reading you right :)

Not experiencing the aforementioned issue.

I wish they'd re-instate the GMC UI though, found it very handy with multiple media running...

No that is not what I said. Please re-read and think about the process.

Thanks.

strange. I just tried it on both W7 and W11 and it worked: created a file and named it abc.txt. Then renamed it to Abc.txt => Explorer would still show as abc.txt. Hit F5 (or use the Refresh option from the right click menu), and tadaaa it shows Abc.txt.

If you are using a laptop, make sure your Fn keys are activated.
I've performed some quick tests and found a caveat to my issue...
Issue I'm describing persists when renaming files on a USB flash drive.
I'm not sure if it's totally isolated to that type of disk or volume.

No issue renaming a file, no refresh required:
  • on the desktop on the NVMe SSD
  • on secondary internal SATA disks
  • on an external USB disk.
I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I noticed these differences when I run the following command
Code:
wmic logicaldisk get
  • flash disk Description is Removable, others are Local Fixed Disks
  • flash disk FileSystem is FAT32, others are NTFS
