I have a laptop that was on a domain, I have now removed it from that. On the Windows background is some text showing the IT support contact info which I want to removet, and would welcome help from someone with more knowledge than me on this topic please. Many thanks.

I accidentally joined a domain once which set up all sorts of annoying group policies. I immediately left domain and it did not revert all the policies.

In my case, I was lucky that I had an image backup before I joined the domain so was able to reverse my error with minimal effort.

If you are using Pro, you can run group policy editor to see any set policies but it can be a laborious exercise.

It may be easier to just reinstall Windows from scratch.

Easer would be to use the gpresult from command line.
for example (google for advanged commands for gpresult):
gpresult /F /H c:\output.html

I always use that when pc's that are connected to the domain, as you would set diffrent group policy's on OU, and subdivisions, and then with all those diffrent policy sets in place, it gets hard to track down where the policy came from.

My guess is they're running BGInfo to plaster IT's contact info and other important details over the background.

I came across this, coincidently from another Lenovo owner.

1. The company does not exist anymore.

2. I created a Win 10 USB stick with MS's Media Creation Tool and deleted all existing partitions. After installing Windows, I got the Company domain login again. I also saw that the company's diagnostic tools are still available during boot.

So how can I get rid of that?

How would they do that? Modified the firmware or something?

Try a Firmware update?
If you go to the support page at Lenovo, it should be able to detect your Laptop and give you any updates.

Where exactly does the Company name show? In the middle, bottom right?

Search the PC for BGinfo.exe
Check for BGInfo keys in the registry HKCU\Software\Wininternals But remove the program (if it exists) first.

That is a PC that has been enrolled in Autopilot. Once enrolled, only the IT department of the company using Autopilot to configure this work PC can un-enroll it from Autopilot.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I had 3 fairly new laptops a few years ago that I was installing software on for a company I knew that went insolvent and locked it’s doors a couple of weeks later. No way to contact anyone so the laptops now live with 3 different families who lost everything. Fortunately no branding.

If the PC's enrolled in Autopilot, you need to perform a clean install with the network completely off (no Wi-FI either) until you log into the desktop. Every time you need to re-install, repeat this process of denying network access.

gpresult /F /H c:\output.html

I always use that when pc's that are connected to the domain, as you would set diffrent group policy's on OU, and subdivisions, and then with all those diffrent policy sets in place, it gets hard to track down where the policy came from.
