Windows 11 backup and restore questions

If I use the inbuilt windows 11 backup programme to make a complete system backup of my 3 HDDs and then do another say a week later, is the second backup an incremental one or another full one (just thinking about the time & space it would take every time) ?
Secondly if I do make a full system backup can I then select specific drives or folders/files to restore or do I have to do a complete system restore even though I might only have "lost" one of my 3 hard disks?

Would I be better off with a commercial programme?

Any help much appreciated

As shown on the icon in Control Panel the built-in backup is labeled with Windows 7. With more complex setups I'd go with a commercial program. I use a NAS drive attached to my LAN to store/access data from Wired and Wireless computers.

Welcome to the forum.
The answer to your question is YES. The backup feature in Windows is deprecated and even Microsoft advises use of a 3rd party backup solution. MOST 3rd party apps can do full, incremental, and differential backups. Some are paid and some are free. There are many, many threads on the forum regarding backup and imaging and a good number of different apps discussed. Of these different 3rd party backup solutions I believe I am safe to say that Haselo Backup Suite is the most recommended free one right now and Macrium is the most recommended paid one.

The question is Windows 11 backup does a full backup or incremental image backup are you answering OP question because looks like not?

I was replying to you. But you are correct that 'Backup and Restore (Windows 7)' does only full images.

But members have suggested alternatives where this is not so.

I create incremental image backup using Macrium Reflect i reply to OP question.

I use TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite. Using that and the supplied TBIView and TBIMount applications (both of which are free parts of the suite) it is possible to extract individual files/folders from a backup image file.
