Windows 11 closes all apps and folders in sleep/hibernation

Windows 11
Hello, I am new to Windows 11. I have noticed that when I put my laptop to sleep. After a certain amount of time, when I wake my computer, I come to find that all my programs have turned off along with any open windows/file explorers. It's like I restarted my computer. It gets annoying when I have a lot of windows open and I am doing some editing and I walk away. I then have to restart everything and arrange my windows, etc.

This is not the behaviour I am used to in my Windows 10 devices. When my computer goes to sleep/hibernation, I expect to continue from where I left off hours later. But with this behavior, I have to start all over again.

What is the cause for this and how can I fix it?

Things to try:
1. Run power troubleshooter Settings>System>Troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>Power>Run

2. Turn off fast startup Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 11 Tutorial

3. Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

4. More than likely this is another woe of a laptop that uses modern standby. If none of the above helps, please open a command prompt as admin and type powercfg -a and post a screenshot of the results so we can see what you're working with.

To accomplish what you want of keeping all your apps and files open, the only other power option that I know to suggest to use hibernate. If anyone else has other ideas, hopefully they will jump in.

Modern standby laptops have been known to overheat so, no matter if you use S0 sleep or hibernate, I do advise that if you carry your laptop in an enclosed case that you shut it down.

I agree that you should try hibernation to check if the problem is confined to "Sleep" [well, S0 Modern standby, your computer does not have S3 Sleep itself].

Best of luck,

@glasskuter @Try3 After futher experimenting, it appears my computer does the "sleep closing of apps" when I walk away from the computer and it goes to sleep. When I explicitly tell it to hibernate, it doesn't happen. I will try to tell it to sleep explictly and see if it closes my programs.

Any reason why this would be happening like that? I was under the impression hibernation would be the culprit for my prgram closing but it appears not to be. I

I urge you to stop thinking of or using the term sleep.
- Your computer does not have S3 Sleep.
- Your computer has S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle].

S0 Modern standby progressively inhibits running applications [except ones favoured by MS such as mail & Windows update].
- I didn't remember that they were actually closed. I thought they were merely prevented from doing anything.

I ended up disabling S0 Modern standby and now just have On, Hibernate, Off.
Some people find that S3 Sleep gets enabled by the act of disabling S0 Modern standby. [I was not so lucky]

All the best,
Denis

I'm going to be honest, I don't understand or know anything about these s power states. But it sounds like you're saying my issue is s0. How do I disable it and have it only hibernate when I close my laptop screen and when I leave my laptop idle?

Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and Windows 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
apart from a tool that applies just to some Ryzen CPU Bioses together with a procedure that edits it. I suppose that it carries some risk but I can dig out my notes if you are interested.
- Many users have found that disabling S0 enables S3 Sleep. I didn't, I now only have on, hibernate, off but it's better than having S0 messing things up.

Before I disabled S0, I did spend some time using a sort of halfway house workaround :-
- Power options - Turn off the display - Never
- Screensaver - Set to turn on after 1 minute [or whatever you want]. Blanks screensaver chosen so the display looks off even though it's not - C:\Windows\System32\scrnsave.scr
This setup stops S0 Modern standby ever starting.

All the best,

If I did the halfway house workaround, does the computer eventually go into hibernate after a certain amount of time? Or does it never go into hibernate unless say I close the lid or explictly tell the computer to hibernate before I walk away? @Try3

I don't think it will affect your hibernation timer in Power options. You could test that expectation by setting hibernation to a short time then letting the system sit there unused for that period [plus a couple of minutes].

So I tried your work around way but I still get the same behaviour. Unless i close my lid or tell the computer to hibernate, it still does the s0 thing where it shuts down everything.
So this means I cannot leave my computer alone and walk away for like 10 mins without it going into s0 sleep and shutting down alll my applications

Not much. I agree with everything Try3 said. See if a repair install might help. Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial

Make sure you have the latest UEFI bios update installed.

I'd be calling Asus support and screaming to high heaven. If you do, demand upper tier support. Don't mess around with chat or first tier.

Unless i close my lid or tell the computer to hibernate,

If a repair install doesn't help, you may be forced to having to manually control it every time by manually hibernating. Make yourself a desktop shortcut. If hibernate feature is turned on, the command will put your PC into hibernation. When hibernation is turned off, the same command will put your PC in to sleep mode.

To Create a Hibernate/Sleep Shortcut

Right click on the Desktop and go to "New" and select "Shortcut".

In the shortcut box, under target, type c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
Name it Hibernate . Right click on the shortcut and assign it an icon.

Wouldn't this mess up the Asus image specific customizations. Disable some features? I'd imagine that thing installs a vanilla version of Windows 11

Sorry, I don't follow this question. A shortcut to put a computer to sleep/hibernate is just that, a shortcut. It doesn't change anything. In your above post you said
Unless i close my lid or tell the computer to hibernate
I was under the assumption you had enabled hibernation already. Is that not correct?

Personally, I disabled S0 and have never regretted it. You might like to make a note of this to consider later on.
Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
Unlike some other people, disabling S0 did not enable S3 Sleep for me so I'm left with just: on, hibernate, off.

If S0 Modern standby is starting despite having set Power options to keep the display on then that is not normal.
I agree with our friendly Texican above, you should be seeking help from Asus.
Only consider disabling S0 Modern standby after everything is resolved so you can, at the very least, see what normal behaviour is.

By the way, your hibernation shortcut can be much simpler than that. You can just use
Code:
shutdown.exe /h

I am facing identical issue with Asus Zenbook, any solution for this?

I noticed that Windows is closing apps only from the Windows store. If you are downloading the same app not from Windows store (e.g Slack), it's still keeping open after sleep.
