Windows 11 closes all apps and folders in sleep/hibernation

You guys are just 2 of many involved in the modern standby chaos. A web search of "sleep modern standby closes apps" will give many things to try, but it boils down to if you are not one of the lucky ones who is able to disable S0 sleep and enable S3, then you are out of luck. (only a select few devices allow it)
The consensus is the only way to stop it from closing apps is to disable all sleep, hibernate, modern standy, etc, etc and just set your laptop to turn off the screen. That is not acceptable for most laptop users, due to all the other issues with S0 sleep (overheating & battery drain)

It's a catch 22 for laptop owners. Until MS and the OEMs do something about it, laptop owners are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Not enough are putting pressure back on the OEMs who agreed to MS stupid plan for instant on devices. The saddest part is the consumer goes in blind when buying these devices without any idea these problems exist.

Just tested with S3, yes laptop isn't turning back after sleep, fans are working but unfortunately black screen.

So I guess till that point the only possible solution is to disable sleep mode at all :/

This is crazy, when in 2023, sleep is not working properly

I feel your pain and so do thousands of others. In your particular case, where keeping apps open is important to you, if your laptop sits on a desk running on AC power at all times albeit with a black screen screensaver, do not close the lid; I remember one report here on this forum where his laptop actually caught fire sitting on a desk with lid closed. If you travel with your laptop in a case, turn it off. And this doesn't even take into account how this will affect the longevity of a laptop's hardware. So if your data is important to you, take the precaution of keeping current backups.

So I tried your work around way but I still get the same behaviour
I do not think that S0 Modern standby has anything to do with your problem of applications closing.
The workaround should have prevented S0 Modern standby from kicking in at all. So, since the symptoms persist when you are using the workaround of keeping the display on the whole time, there must be another cause.

If you want to double-check, you can see power state transitions in Event viewer.
Import Event viewer, Custom views - Power state transitions - my post #4 - TenForums
If you set up that workaround then you will not see any change to your power state; you will not see any S0 Modern standby power state.

All the best,
Denis

Update on my end, this issue hasn't popped up lately. Not sure what I tinkered with or if it is a windows update that fixed it for me. I know I did some troubleshoot method + some installation intergrity thing. I also created my own power plan. I don't know which methods resulted in me not getting this issue anymore though. How about you?

If you're using Chrome and upon resuming your session, find the tabs are closed, try the following quick fix that seems to have worked for me:

  • Click on the Chrome Menu bar (three dots) on the right up corner of the browsing window.
  • From the menu list, head to Settings.
  • Then select the On startup tab from the left pane
  • Finally, enable “Continue where you left off” checkbox.

I encountered this problem with a my newly delivered Windows 11 PC (not laptop). Researched, tried recommended solutions:
Power troubleshooter showed no issues
Tried sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- neither showed any issue, made no dfference
Tried enabling hibernate (rather than sleep). Was not initially available, had to change via powershell command (powercfg -h on). Didn't make any difference.
Finally I tried turning hybrid sleep to "off" - had been set "on".
Problem fixed, for me! Pleased, but this surely has to be Windows bug of some sort.
