Solved Windows 11 has suddenly lost Pro license activation

Check your email associated with your account. You would have gotten an email like this but a different price:

There is also an order number in the email as well as in the subject line.

I the email was put in spam that blue button should take you to your order.

I have only one e-mail from Microsoft from the day when I made the Windows 11 Pro purchase. This is a screenshot of it:

screenshot_2.webp
screenshot_3.webp

As can be seen there is no product key in my e-mail. Clicking on the blue "Je bestelling weergeven of beheren" (= "View or manage your order") button takes me to a Microsoft website with my purchase history which doesn't list a product key either (see also screenshot in one of previous comments).

The mentioned error 0xC004C003 is also explained here; a key that has been used to many times and marked as blocked. (As I suspected)
That only makes it more puzzling to me as to why my Windows installation is giving this error code.

I know for certain that I have never given my key to anyone else, because I never even knew what the key exactly was. But whatever Pro key I have (or had) on my Windows 11 machine, it came directly from the Microsoft Store. And I have never tried to install my purchased Windows 11 Pro on any laptop other than my current one (which I've had since before I purchased the Windows 11 Pro upgrade). I have also not made any hardware changes to the laptop since I bought it.

Sorry to hear that.

You could try de-activating and uninstalling the key
then repeat the steps above

Another option might be swap out the drive for a blank one, do a quick local account clean install + update, and then try the above. If it works, then that might indicate something "embedded" in your existing installation preventing Home > Pro upgrade. If it doesn't work, then maybe something wrong with your MS account, a call to MS probably the only remaining option.
I'm a bit hesitant to deactivate and uninstall a current key, as it's currently unclear to me whether that is a reversible action or not, and whether it could possibly make the situation worse.

Similarly I'm also a bit hesitant to try putting in a new drive, as I currently don't have an extra one and would have to purchase one first.

That's nuts . . . you're going to have to talk to someone at MS or, if your short on time but one from

I googled your problem and this is what I got back . . .

Upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Pro through the Microsoft Store usually grants a
digital license rather than a physical product key. This license is automatically linked to your Microsoft account.

To speak with a live support agent, use the following methods:

1. Use the "Get Help" App (Fastest)

The most direct way to bypass the automated bot and get a human to call you or start a chat is through the built-in Windows app:

  • Open the Get Help app (press the Windows key and type "Get Help").
  • Type "Talk to an agent" or "Chat with a person" into the search box.
  • Select Contact Support at the bottom of the window.
  • Choose Windows as the product and Activation as the category.
  • You should see options to Chat with a support agent or Provide your phone number for a callback.
Or just get a new retail version of Windows 11 Pro from StackSocial as mentioned a few times already. Mine was $9.97 in December but they are 12.97 now.

Are there alternative ways to get in touch with a person from Microsoft support?

According to AI there is if you have not already tried it
If you prefer using your browser, visit the Microsoft Support Contact Page:
  • Sign in with the Microsoft account you used for the purchase.
  • Type "Windows activation issue" and click Get Help.
  • Scroll down and click Contact Support.
  • Under "How would you like to contact us?", choose Chat with a support agent or Request a call back.
In the USA it is Contact Us - Microsoft Support but I don't know if you mentioned what country you are in.

I've followed the Contact Support link on the Microsoft website. However after I then specify in the subsequent prompts that my issue is related to activation of Windows, I get presented a "Choose a support option" menu that lists as only option a link to the Microsoft Product Activation portal. This is another webpage with a series of prompts that culminates in me being asked to enter my installation ID, and after I do get once again an error message that my installation could not be activated.

Are there still other ways to get in touch with a person from Microsoft Support?

I'm a bit hesitant to deactivate and uninstall a current key, as it's currently unclear to me whether that is a reversible action or not, and whether it could possibly make the situation worse.

Similarly I'm also a bit hesitant to try putting in a new drive, as I currently don't have an extra one and would have to purchase one first.
I would be tempted to remove the drive in there and do a clean install onto a new drive with a retail license but only when you have exhausted all other options and that's only because you freaking paid for that upgrade.

Windows 11 works while unactivated - you can install and use the OS, receive security updates, and run programs, but a persistent "Activate Windows" watermark will appear. Personalization settings—like changing wallpapers, themes, and colors—are disabled. I never activated my Windows 10 and I never saw any watermark so I dont know what that is.

Yes, that's always been the case. A physical license key was never available, it was all purely digital - which is why the method I outlined above should work.

On thinking, I have always had to do the Home > Pro activation steps above when I clean install with a local account. I wonder whether the clean install with an MS account would go straight to Pro ... ?

idgat is right, most of the "help" nowadays is truly useless.

If he had a retail license. I bought my Windows 11 Home directly from Microsoft and they send me a KEY so I dont know why others do not get one. A week later I bought a Retail Windows 11 Pro from Stack Exchange and swapped keys. For Home, Microsoft gave me the key in a password enabled XLSX file but the password was in the name of the file so it was not secure.

Now I wonder if Lenovo could be of any assistance?

I had already called that number. When I did I got a bot on the line that asked to describe my issue. After I said I have Windows activation issues the bot told me to go the Microsoft support website and then broke the connection.

Usually a waste of time. Highly AI related and more than likely it will only be a bot that will respond
After trying again today the Get Help app did start, and it was indeed a waste of time. It has the same content as the Microsoft support website, and just like there after I specify that I have Windows activation issues then at no point do I ever get an option to talk or chat with a person.

That would be incorrect. I took my laptop that had Windows 11 Home on it, told it to change the key to a new Windows 11 Pro key and it proceeded to upgrade the Windows Home to Windows Pro. All the applications and data were retained.

There's even a tutorial here to show you how to do that. I personally used Option #2, I had a valid Windows 11 Pro key.

I already admitted earlier that I made a mistake. You can upgrade from Home to Pro.

I purchased Windows 11 Pro directly from Microsoft (in the Microsoft Store app). And to the best of my knowledge (and I think I have really looked everywhere) I was never provided a key by Microsoft. The activation happened automatically last times after starting the upgrade process from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro from the Microsoft Store app.

Only right now the Microsoft Store app with my logged-in account is seemingly not recognizing anymore as it did in the past that I have a purchased Windows 11 Pro license.

There are 2 ways

1) Buy a key online, get the product key by e-mail. Go to the activation page of Windows and change the product key and enter the Windows 11 Pro license key. Windows will go to their activation servers and check if the key is valid. If valid it will activate Windows and download the necessary files to make from Home a Pro edition.

2) Use the Microsoft store. After payment it will upgrade your system to Pro. Apparently it will upgrade without sending you a Product Key. Without that you may run into trouble if you re-activate it again as it seems. I want a Product Key on paper to fill in when I wanted it to. It's sees you have a Windows 11 Home system (while Pro is installed) and MS is stonewalling you by saying; Install Windows Home 11..... Why? Has the OEM rigged your system in such a way that you can't install Pro? I don't believe that is the case here. You got Windows 11 Pro working after you bought it through the store.

My advice? Goto MS and complain about this and demand a solution. Show them your proof of purchase and the error message you are getting. Demand that you are getting a valid Product Key send to you by e-mail that works.

That's why I don't prefer #2. A second reason: I took a look. My Pro license can be upgraded to Workstation for the small amount *cough* of $199... A bit steep. (as you live also in the Netherlands) I can buy a Workstation License key for €24,90. ($29,37) (Windows 11 Pro Retail; €12,90 ($15,22))

This Product Key will be send digitally (by e-mail) to me.
I have bought for instance also bought games digitally online (even Office 2021) After payment; I got the key and a link where I can download the product online. Install it, enter the key and I can use the product. When removed I can reinstall the product ISO again and use it after I have entered the key again.

Note; Don't go to the Store to watch your list of products; Goto your personal MS page (https://account.microsoft.com) and view all the details using your MS-account. Log in and look under devices for you laptop (by system product name) and see what type of OS is registered here; Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. Unfortunately it does not show your license key..... (If it says Windows 11 Pro you can use that as evidence when contacting MS too.)

To contact Microsoft; call their helpdesk in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) 020-5001500. If they need some proof; they can provide you with an e-mail address to send your proof of purchase etc. to. I hope they will resolve your case on a short basis.
