Windows 11 REALLY sucks in performance compared with Window 10

I thought it was well known that Win 11 UI is more laggy than Win 10. The first thing you see everyone complain about Windows 11 is the 1) The new right click context menu and 2) The UI delay.

It's not a terrible OS, but it is a step down from 10. Don't get me wrong I don't hate Windows 11 it has some stuff going for it like gaming performance has gotten better on this OS across the board. However Microsoft is making really hard to love it with the bloat and bugs from 24H2/25H2. The whole TPM 2.0 thing has soured my respect for MS too. My family members don't want to buy new hardware when the stuff they have runs 300% fine for what they use it for. So for those machines I just threw linux mint on them.

I think once the AI craze is over MS will get back on track but as it stands, and I don't know how others feel, but I feel like we're the test dummies for their new products and design, instead of a OS where you can customize what you want from it you get a big bundle of slop that 90% of it won't be used by the average consumer. It feels like a big part of the OS is just advertisement for their AI stuff.

There's not a lot of alternatives depending on your use case either. If you play games linux is okay for the most part as long as you aren't trying to use a Nvidia card on a DX12 game(15-25% performance loss from shoddy drivers) or trying to play games with a kernel anti-cheat. But other programs may not work well under wine and in that case your stuck dual-booting which can be a headache if you do it from the same drive.

Sorry for the long post, this is just something I've been thinking about lately after upgrading from 10. It's just annoying watching Microsoft start new projects and then not stick with them long enough for it to work out and then you have stuff like copilot integration everywhere that they are doubling down on.

You don't have to be an ass, although I see you can.
That's your opinion, although you're not the first.

Where is the bias?
You said you had already moved to Linux prior to this. If it walks like a duck...

We can get pretty scientific if you wish - watch the video and you tell me which OS is faster. I've added a screenshot of how the comparison is made and to me it is pretty fair and as comprehensive as the software allows me to be.

Watching one video, where someone is simply clicking on something, is not scientific. Two laptops tested of the same model, but only two. We don't have any information on what you did as far as firmware and drivers. I could go on but it's hardly necessary.

I don't want to cast aspersions on another IT department, because I have no idea what they did to deploy your laptop initially or upgrade it later. I can tell you, and did tell you, that delays like what you described and showed are atypical.

Where is your test? What have you done to prove that Win11 is faster? Or are we just going to throw stuff like that?

Deployment of Windows 10 and 11 on thousands upon thousands of devices, some upgraded and some re-imaged.

It depends on the version and how you disable Windows features. You can make Windows 11 as fast as Windows 10. I use this 21h2 Lite and it runs fast; I even disabled the CPU usage mitigation.

@maur0 Running Windows 11 Pro on a dozen various PC configurations, latest drivers, O&O ShutUp 10++, Spybot Anti-Beacon, Configured & tweaked Windows 11 performance tweaks, varied ram & drive configurations.

All run decent, and better than Windows 10. My oldest PC running Windows 11 is a CPU from 2008. Yes, you read that correctly. Before Windows 11 Pro, I was a fan of Windows 7 Pro (& Windows 7 Ultimate). Why? Performance & reliability.

When configured properly, Windows 11 Pro is reasonably quick, and damn reliable. Zero crashes, zero BSOD.

Yes, I use good quality ram. Yes, the drivers are all current as possible. Is AI turned off? Yes.
You get the idea.

i have noticed that on my gaming PC, since upgrading from Windows 10 to 11, that when I launch the calculator, it used to open almost instantly and now there is a second or so pause. I can see the window, and almost like a thumbnail of the calculator icon, before it finally opens and lets me start mashing buttons.

Sadly, I use the calculator app a ton, so i noticed it.

I wonder if the regedit string value
MenuShowDelay and change from 400 (default in milliseconds) to 0 (instant) would affect that?

I know it makes the start menu instant.

How to change the MenuShowDelay setting

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

.Find the MenuShowDelay string value.

If it doesn't exist, create a new String Value by right-clicking in the right pane and selecting New > String Value.

Double-click MenuShowDelay and change the "Value data" to a lower number, such as 100 or 0 for instant menus.

Click OK and restart your computer or sign out and back in for the change to take effect.

I think he may have some valid points ....

1.) My Windows 11 pc at work runs eons slower than my Windows 11 work pc at home, this is probably due to that it runs off a server and is more than likely throttled and it's system specs are far lower than the one I use at home.
2.) My Windows 11 Pro home pc runs decent but a lot slower than when it ran 10 even with decent system specs (64 gigs of ram, i9 water cooled processor and m.2 ssd) , anything and everything that could be affecting performance has been turned off.

If I were to, and I have tested it , run Linux on the very same system, the pc runs like a scalded dog, without any adjustments at all, I don't have time to blink after clicking on something and it opening.

This is why the five other pc's in my home all run Linux with the only exception being the one I need to use for work due to proprietary software reasons.

@HTA My experience has been the same as yours, including a local account. As for heat, I haven't noticed any more heat than any other Windows. Although if I were a gamer or bit coin miner with lots more GPU work, I'm sure there would be more heat.

That said, I do have my mibile workstation / laptop on an additional fan platform by default to help it breathe.

Which I recommend to anyone with a laptop 💻/ mobile workstation.

This thing is the best value.

On a side-note, I had a friend that had heat issues and he too his mobile workstation to a repair shop in Texas. I sent him some replacement fans for his repair and they charged him $200.
His laptop was fine for two or three months, then back to GPU heat problem (he's not a gamer).

When he visited me, I replaced his fans, and cleaned CPU, GPU,
from old thermal paste - they did a sloppy bad job.

I used high quality thermal paste and all has been great since.

There was a time that there was some imposter thermal paste sold on Amazon with the reputable brand label. It IS possible that the Texas repair shop unknowingly used imposter paste.

Texas repair shop's old sloppy thermal paste application. Not right.
They may not have even used the new fans, and just blew out the old ones.

I wonder if the regedit string value
MenuShowDelay and change from 400 (default in milliseconds) to 0 (instant) would affect that?

I know it makes the start menu instant.
Just tested it, changed value, rebooted, tested and no change.

This is exactly the experience that I am seeing

And it's only happening on my gaming computer, the one i upgraded to 10. On my beelink where I installed windows 11 clean, it opens instantly. So, it's not necessarily an inherent problem with 11, but what I noticed on this system.

The system where it's delayed.; Ryzen 9 5900x, 64GB of RAM, 3080, with 2TB WD SN850
The sys where it is fast: Intel Core i5-8279u, 32GB of RAM, Intel Iris onboard video, Silicon Motion 512GB Nvme drive.

I've noticed 11 to feel not quite as snappy as 10 on my systems. They have a laundry list of modifications done to them because of our enterprise environment and 10 dealt with modifications better. It seems that there's unnecessary interconnected dependencies and even times where it appears that Microsoft actively punish people who mess with certain settings. eg: N version users have disabled mobile USB drivers, oobe bypass users have ctrl+alt+del disabled (latest builds).

I've also noticed that there are a lot more "microsoft moments" where stuff just breaks because Microsoft on 11 compared to 10. More buggy.

All that said I'm configuring some new Dell Pro Slim desktops now with AMD Ryzen 5 8600G, and after removing the Dell bloatware they are idling on 0% CPU usage. I suspect that the tech guys in OP's company haven't step by step checked their setup process and just applied W10 setups. Just cause things should work doesn't mean they will.

I personally have seen no instance where Windows 11 is as fast as Windows 10. And the difference in speed is not even close. If anyone has any scripts, registry changes or anything to speed up Windows 11 feel free to share them. I've tried everything I could find and I still find Windows 11 either slower or unusable.

🤷‍♂️ - YMMV....

Windows 11 runs noticeably better on every machine I have ever tried it on. Ironically, the older the machine, the better Win 11 runs vs Win 10.

But clearly, that is not the result that everyone sees.

@hsehestedt My experience with Win 11 vs Win 10 PCs has been much the same as what you've described. The oldest PC being from 2008 running Windows 11 Pro 23H2.

I have two computers a nearly 3-year-old desktop PC and 1 year old Asus Vivobook laptop (see My Computers below for specs). Neither computer has ever run Windows 10. I've not used Windows 10 for over 4 years, and it isn't important to me which OS is supposedly faster. There is much more than just speed to what makes a good OS. Windows 10 is rapidly becoming old hat and outdated seeing it is now in the ESU phase of support.

What difference does this cooling pad make to performance?

Well, I think the issue is we have very different definitions of certain words here. My clients and myself didn't buy over spec'ed high end PCs due to the costs and neither I nor them consider a 3 year old PC that runs Windows 10 Pro perfectly "old". I stumbled across this site because I've been fooling around with installing Windows 11 Pro in a VM on an Intel based MacBook Pro. Quite frankly the results are pretty bad. It certainly "runs" but is at best "somewhat usable" if I need to run a Windows only program in an emergency. I was curious so I setup up a Windows 10 Pro VM on that laptop also. The difference is night and day. Windows 10 runs perfectly, you can't even tell it's in a VM. Swiping between MacOS and Windows 10 is seamless. Windows 11 on the other hand is basically unusable.

I've seen the same thing when my clients have me setup a new Windows 11 Pro PC on their network and install their software. Employees used to fight over who gets the new PC, now they fight over who gets to keep their old PC.

As I said, YMMV....
