The only way I know at this moment is using ElevenClock, that lays a mask over (the clock position of) the existing taskbar.

That's combined with use of StartAllBack (SAB) but ElevenClock will fully function without SAB!
The settings of ElevenClock allow you to show date or not, change font and charactersize, color of the background and the clock characters and so on.

I just tested DS Clock. It scans clean locally and at Virustotal.
You can change.... format, font, foreground and background colors, text size, and the transparency.
This is the FREE version...
LOL it also has sounds you can turn ON or OFF. It just chimed the half hour.
By default it sounds like Big Ben in the UK, or Arizona... I'm not sure anymore.
I set the background color, the same as my desktop color...
Notes:
You can tell it which time server to sync with, if desired.
You can set it to show times all over the world.
You can also set alarms and reminders.
Just right click the clock display to get to the Options.
You can drag it anywhere on your desktop, and probably to other screens as well.
Installation directory... 7MB
Oh... and when you set this one to "always on top", it's... always on top. ^^
All in all, a decent and free clock. ^^
Someone put a lot of work into this clock.
Here it is at 48 point, Harry Potter font... it can use any installed font on your computer.

That indeed is a very usable alternative!
I tested it and managed to get exactly the same view as with ElevenClock:
Top: DS Clock in my VirtualBox testsystem
Bottom: ElevenClock in my normal system
No difference at all and DS Clock has a much easier settings interface.
The only problem (for me) is, that in DS Clock there is no option to show the date when you are hoovering the clock, like in normal Windows and in ElevenClock:
And because I don't want to see the date continuously, I really would like to have that option.
So for now I'll stick with ElevenClock.
But it certainly is a nice program!
