Windows 11 update repeatedly fails

Go here and use the Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 11 ISO...




Then do Option Two, here...

I'm getting a bit confused now...

I'm just at the tail end of waiting for the Windows 11 ISO file to download - it's incredibly slow! Can't I just mount this and go?

I assume the Media creation Tool will just do the same thing, so I will have to wait on another 1-2 hour download?

The Media Creation Tool is pretty fast. It took me about ten minutes.
The MCT only downloads the correction version.

I tried just doing the ISO mounting option, but it wouldn't give me the option to keep my Applications, saying it wasn't the right language (English - International). This is a surprise as I purchased it here in the UK!

I'm trying the Media Creation Tool route now. It seems to have defaulted to US English, but the ISO download is again extremely slow and will probably take an hour or two. I will have to cancel and resume tomorrow morning (Can't believe I've lost 11 working days to fixing Windows crap!).

Yeah, for the In-Place Upgrade to work, the ISO must be the same language as the installed version.

When I did my in-place upgrade because of the same issue as the OP, I had trouble with this. So, I asked good old CoPilot how to find the correct language for the ISO. It said to look here which for me was correct. I then created the ISO (Beta Insider Channel) from UUP Dump.

When Windows update fails (especially critical updates) I go to Win Catalog to look for it and download the stand alone. The process usually takes a while but it almost always works. Just sayin'.

This has become yet another windows 11 nightmare!!!

So went through the Media Creation Tool Process (taking 3-4 hours) and at the end of it I got this:

Anyone have any idea where I go from here? To be clear this problem has definitely been created by the current Windows update. Before this, everything, including updates, was working fine.

I really don't know what I can do next to fix this problem!

I have run the system file checker (sfc /scannow) with this result:

And then DISM:


Now running windows update again to see if that has fixed the problem.

Updates still fail. Running the media creation tool process again to see if the file check fix made any difference. This will probably take another 2-3 hours.

There are no other devices attached to computer.

Anyone have any other suggestions other than a clean install - I REALLY need to avoid losing my applications?!

But this can be changed by the user at any time, right? So it may not be correct?

Here... I chose English - UK. There was no English International.





Just click on "Create download package".

After it downloads, create a new folder on your desktop and extract the ZIP file to the new folder.
You will see this in the NEW folder...




Just double click the file in the RED box to start the creation of the ISO.
When it's done it will tell you.... "press 0 to Exit".
It will take a while, so go make yourself a sandwich or some bangers.




This will be Win 11 Home or Pro (whichever you have installed), 26100.6584 which was the Sept 9th update.




If none of these methods work for you, then you'll be looking at a clean install.

My 2nd attempt at using the MCT after the scannow/DISM scan and repair is still running (sooo many lost hours!), but I'm not holding out much hope for this method.

I will try your UUp Dump method next...

If that fails, since this is definitely a consequence of the last Windows update, I guess my only option is defer any more updates until Microsoft issue a fix.

Fortunately there are often many ways to approach a PC issue.

Some work more or less, others appear to be perfect fixes, and the rest aren't worth mentioning.

My I suggest using the freeware version of Belarc Advisor to find out exactly what security updates you are missing in total.

Belarc Advisor will also list the license keys to your applications so that you can copy them down and keep them in a safe location.

Of course, this only works if you are able to boot into your operating system and install Belarc Advisor. Even if you cannot do this I recommend keeping this tool on a USB stick for future use. It can be very handy as far as security is concerned. The company is legitimate, has been in existence for well over a decade, and has an impeccable reputation.

Yes, Graham. The fix may take two to three hours. It will likely take more than this. Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows.

A few things: Have you tried using system restore? Sometimes this actually works. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? It's a bit tricky to do with Win 10 and 11 but not always impossible. I am assuming of course that you can boot to your OS. IF you can get those license keys there's a good chance that you will NOT lose your applications. Are you able to reset while keeping all your files and applications? Again. I would do a search regarding these error codes including the words Win Catalog. I had a nasty glitch similar to this when installing 24H2 on an X299 system board. The stand alone installer fixed it.

As expected, the attempt with the MCT failed with exactly the same error message, so will move on to the UUP Dump now.

Hi Scannerman. I have now spent two very long days JUST on this, and I am still no further forward!

I did try system restore, but it seems that, unknown to me, system restore was disabled, so there were no restore points available (lesson learned!).

I have never booted into safe mode in Windows 11. Is that an option to run the in-place upgrade?

I think a reset only gives the option of keeping personal files, not the applications. I am really very keen to keep my running applications and settings because, among many, many other Windows glitches I have spent over a week firefighting Windows 11s' deliberate disabling of my network sharing on other computers and so do not want to go through all that again! Microsoft has now lost me enough of my income that I could have bought an Apple computer!

I hate it when that happens. Don't blame yourself. Sometimes system restore will get disabled for no good reason. This is why many consider it unreliable.

The reason I asked about safe mode is because I wanted to make certain this feature was an option for you in the even that you needed to run a repair and some program or application was interfering with the process. Not all repairs can be made in safe mode but sometimes it is possible. I'm trying to deal in possibilities here. Admittedly, I'm not a Win 11 guru so I could be running on older knowledge.

I'm sorry about your loss of revenue due to your network issues. Win 11 is notorious for networking issues and this is why the rest of my household is still running Win 10. IF you can get your network running again on Win 10 I personally advise that you do this for the time being because IMO Win 11 still has a long way to go before it's networking can be legitimately reliable. BUT that is just my opinion.

One thing I am happy to learn is that you can still boot into your OS. Please run Belarc Advisor to find out exactly what updates you are currently missing. Often you will not be able to install certain updates until you are caught up on former updates. More often than one would prefer a stand alone installer is required to accomplish this. Your issue is starting to sound ominously like my own issue before I finally discovered the fix. Again, I'm sorry this is taking so much precious time but not much can be done for it. This is not to say that Apple doesn't have their own issues. *pip-pip* Stiff upper lip and all that!

Just follow the steps. Zbook knows his stuff inside and out. He is rarely ever wrong.
