Windows 11 upgrade

i think those who say that the future may add more CPU's are just people who are hopeful that Microsoft will face enough backlash for not supporting older CPU's that they will drop the requirement down the road. It's just hopes and dreams at this point.

It's just hopes and dreams at this point.

Though I'm one who'd hope this would be the case, I too never expected it. Will now have to revert back to Windows 10 both my backup desktop and main laptop :(

Anyway, I just finished clean installing 11 on my fully supported desktop listed in system specs (System One). From start to finish took less than 18 minutes - 17: 39 (timed).

Now the fun part starts with installing all my other programs and getting things setup :)

Microsoft has released a way to install 11 on unsupported machines, but they don't recommend it. They don't say much else, so whether they will allow update in the future, or not, is up in the air. Ways to install Windows 11

People pointing to that article as an endorsement by Microsoft saying you can run on unsupported equipment need to pay attention to this warning...
It is good to see MS openly acknowledging that an unsupported install is possible, and even saying how to do one. I did mine for System Two below before MS had said anything other than 'not allowed'. I am fully prepared to acknowledge and understand the risks, if only to continue testing the extent of the MS statement that "you won't be entitled to receive updates". Should it turn out to be true, well I'll just swap its original W10 HDD back in

One of the potential downsides of running Windows 11 on unsupported processors could be quite serious one - the Spectre/Meltdown, and related malware attacks were stopped in two ways a code change in the Windows 10 code that slowed down the processor slightly to give the system time to prevent the malware from doing damage, eventually with the changes in architecture of the last Gen7 and all Gen8 Intel and the Gen2 AMD Rysen Processors the malware was stopped completely.

If the Windows 11 code does no longer have the internal code added to Windows 10, to prevent this malware issue (and there is no reason to think they do as only Processors with the newer architecture are on the compatible list), then those systems with old processors running Windows 11 would be susceptible to attack from Spectre group malware - Or new derivatives that utilise the Spectre type malware.

This may be a potential issue that never becomes a reality, and I hope so, but there is a chance it will

I got an email in my Hotmail account this morning and found a lot of useful information in it with lots of links to further explore things to do with 11. Windows 11 Specs and System Requirements | Microsoft

I expect the majority of you all will already know all this but I thought it was something that could be useful to some people.

I'm surprised Microsoft put this out there really and didn't simply leave it for the wizards of the world to figure out and have at it. The lawyers obviously wanted the acknowledgement on the part of the user of the method so they cover themselves legally. I wait to see what the ramifications are for users down the road.

IMHO I don't see MS removing the code. If MS doesn't release new security updates for unsupported devices, I do see them being targets for any new variants. There is a saying, just because one can do something doesn't mean they should do it. I had a laptop that was running a 6th gen i7. It ran the leaked build of Win 11 without any problems. I think this is one of my OCD symptoms. I want all my devices to run the same OS versions. I didn't want to take a chance so I bought a new laptop that does meet the Win 11 requirements. On the old laptop I did a clean install of Win 10 Home and donated it to a family member.

I think this is one of my OCD symptoms. I want all my devices to run the same OS versions.
Fortunately I don't suffer from that variant  I routinely and happily swap between machines running Win7, Win10 or Win11. I also have XP and Win8 available as VMs. After a while I no longer see the surface differences, just the underlying similarities.

Came across this ..

...which touches on most of the gripes we have incl. new WDM (btw. I checked out What's new in driver development - Windows drivers - can't find anything relevant) and the contentious malware (btw TPM is not regarded by security experts as a fail-safe for this.. so MS should check their facts)

The MS marketing machine will spread FUD at any opportunity - like the 52% crashes on older CPU's? No really! no cohort or any details of testbed or independence etc - and they expect people to trust them? I haven't seen a single kernel crash on forums since the leak!

Win11 was not offered through Windows Update for any of my 3 Laptops.

I used MediaCreationToolW11 to download Win11.ISO on all three.

After Disabling the startups, uninstalling my virus app, setting Malwarebytes not to run on startup, and setting my vpn app not to run on startup, I was ready.

I copied the Win11.ISO file to the desktop, mounted it and ran setup. I let it download updates and the install ran smoothly without a problem on two of the laptops.

The third laptop had a CPU that was unsupported so I made the registry change approved by Microsoft (AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU ) and went through the same procedures listed above and it installed without a hitch also.
