windows 7 to 10 to 11 license for new motherboard

I currently have Windows 10, which was upgraded for free from a retail Windows 7 key several years ago. I want to upgrade my PC with new parts, including a new motherboard. Will I be able to transfer my Windows 10 license to this new motherboard? Will I be able to upgrade that to Windows 11 for free?

My current motherboard is not eligible for the upgrade due to lack of TPM.

Microsoft is making more difficult to move licenses from old computers to new ones.

If you're buying a laptop it probably will come with Win 11 installed.

You can bypass Win 11 requirements and install it on your computer.
My laptop is from 2014 and is running win 11.

It’s a desktop that I built myself. I’m wanting to upgrade the motherboard. If I can at least transfer my current Windows 10 to that I’d be happy. Even better if it would let me upgrade to 11. But that’s what my question is. I won’t be buying a laptop or any prebuilt computer with an OS already - I want to upgrade parts in my desktop.

There are 3 desktops in our household that are all running Windows 11 24H2 using Windows 7 retail licences originally purchased in 2009. All are now compliant with Windows 11 requirements having had hardware replacements since then, and activation on the new configurations was no problem.

How long ago did you activate them? I’ve been reading some people saying that they don’t allow windows 7 to 10/11 anymore and that they had to buy new licenses. Which is what I’m trying to avoid.

As long as your W7 licence has been upgraded to W10 (mine were in 2015) then you should be fine. What MS withdrew is the optiopn of updating an existing W7 licence now. As you are currently running W10 with that W7 licence you'll be OK. You can check the status in system -> activation. It should say your system is activated with a digital licence.

The digital license is valid for the current hardware. If you change the MB, CPU and memory, from Microsoft point of view, it is a new computer.
You can try to use a Microsoft account and then try it on the new computer.

As the digital licence here is from a retail purchase, then fully replacing the hardware is allowed. Would not be the case with an OEM licence, as that is tied to the motherboard it was first installed on.

The original retail license was for Win 7. Once upgraded to Win 10 it became a generic digital license valid for the current computer.
As the original Win 7 can't be used anymore to activate Win 10, it doesn't matter if it was retail or not. It is useless.

To check whether your licence is OEM or retail, open an elevated command prompt and enter slmgr /dli .
