Windows/apps focus lost upon mouse-click

Recently built a new system based on the AMD 9950 and have a weird issue with this new system.

Every now and then after starting up the PC and logging on to Windows, I'm not able to bring up the Taskbar which I have set to automatically close by moving the mouse cursor down on the screen. I'm able to bring it up by using the Windows key on the keyboard though.

In the same weird way, I can open up any application I have on the desktop by double-clicking just as normal. However, once the application/window is on the screen, I can't interact with it with the mouse. This is true both for applications as well as a normal Windows Explorer window for example. The moment I try to click on anything inside the application/window, I see how it will lose focus. Really odd. Like I would have clicked somewhere on the desktop even when I didn't. The keyboard seems to be working fine though when moving between different buttons etc using TAB.

Last time I had this happening to me, I pressed CTRL-ALT-DEL to see if I could spot any strange looking processes or whatever (feeling a bit scared my system has been infected by something) but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. I've also done a complete scan with the built-in virus scanner in Windows which came out clean. Same thing when running sfc /scannow which didn't find any problems.

Funny thing, after having used Task Manager as mentioned above, suddenly my system "recovered" by itself and I could use the mouse just fine again where the focus worked as expected. Where clicking a window/application will make that one having focus rather than the other way around, where it loses focus when you click on it.

Anyone else had this issue and found a cure?

Since I luckily don't see it constantly but only now and then for the last couple of weeks, it's not super urgent but equally annoying whenever it happens and would be nice to know what the culprit is.

Windows is fully up to date and so are all my hardware drivers, BIOS version etc.

Are you using your mouse in wireless mode?
Are you using the Slipstream wireless adapter or Bluetooth when your mouse is in wireless mode?
Have you made any custom button assignments to your mouse in iCUE?
Try setting the switch underneath to the center position and attaching a USB cable to your PC and see if the mouse acts any differently.
(Or try another wired mouse)
From reading your post, it seems that you can work with the keyboard commands when the mouse is not functional.

No, I use the mouse in wired mode with the button in the middle position.

Bluetooth is disabled on my PC.

I do have custom buttons assignments in Corsair iCUE, both for the mouse and the keyboard. Haven't changed any of these though in a very long time, has been working without any issues for years and there haven't been any recent updates to Corsair iCUE. So I don't think that is where to look for the culprit causing this.

Yes, the keyboard seems to be working fine when this happens. It's only the mouse from what I've seen that is acting in a strange way. But fact is I don't think the issue is with the mouse either. I rather think it's something with Windows, either a bug of some sort and possibly only affecting people with specific hardware. Or could also be a setting in Windows I missed somewhere when I installed a fresh copy of Windows.

I have this vague memory I've seen this before a long time ago but can't recall 100% and even less what the solution would have been.

Turns out this is some form of hardware or possibly BIOS issue. Reason I'm certain of this is how I had the same problem when booting up from a USB stick containing the software required to restore a system image outside of Windows using a software called AOMEI Backupper.

Based on this, the problem must be one of the below as I see it:

• the mouse itself
• the USB hub the mouse is connected to
• the USB port the USB hub is connected to
• some glitch in the BIOS version I'm using

Right now, everything is working normally again. Next time I see the issue, I will start ruling things out based on the list above to try and figure out what the real culprit is.

Is your USB Hub have its own Power Adapter.
Depending on the brand, many USB Hubs may have adverse effects to devices plugged into them if they are not getting enough power from the USB port.
Make sure you are plugging the USB Hub into the Back USB port of the computer if it is a desktop. As the Back ports are stronger than the Front ports.

Try plugging the mouse directly into the back USB ports, do you have the same issue?

The hub has external power and is connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the PC.

Working fine right now but as mentioned, will try different things next time I see the issue. Such as connecting the mouse directly to the PC.
