I would venture that familiarity and ease of use go hand-in-hand. The more one becomes acquainted with using a particular OS the easier it will be to use as opposed to having no clue where or how to navigate or what to select and when. Wine certainly isn't a panacea for Linux and I've had to wait for drivers even with AMD graphic cards. The same thing happened when I needed drivers for my Logitech Prodigy hardware. (Of course I don't bother with this garbage anymore because Logitech went evil.) As a rule most OS have their plusses and minuses. For me, to have the best of both worlds I opted for multi-booting. Probably not everyone's cup of tea but Linux makes this so easy.
I run Windows 11 as host and various other OSes including Ubuntu as virtual machines. Lately while I was upgrading Ubuntu the host crashed for some reason and restarted. This was the equivalent of switching off the computer during upgrading and left Ubuntu with a lot of broken packages. I Googled how to fix it and tried some commands at the Terminal but there were too many errors and unsolved dependencies the repair halted. Like a typical Windows user my next thought was to do an in-place upgrade/repair. Just a small detail, this is NOT supported on Ubuntu and probably other distros! For God's sake! I then booted with the Ubuntu ISO just in case I had better chance to repair Ubuntu from there. To my surprise there is no equivalent of "repair" as there is in Windows Setup USB. So I selected "Try Ubuntu" to load the live USB system and followed a complicated list of commands to manually mount the Ubuntu partition, link each system folder to the appropriate path and, finally, attempt the appropriate commands to repair broken packages. No such luck, I had exactly the same result, the repair halted because there were too many errors and dependencies. So my only option was to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. No way I was going through all this trouble again. Since I already had created a Zorin OS virtual machine out of curiosity, I preferred to just delete the Ubuntu virtual machine and reclaim my valuable hard disk space.

Try saying that again that Linux is user friendly. You might persuade the novice and ignorant users, but not me! I don't believe anything until I have confirmed it myself. And up to now the only thing I have confirmed is that Linux is lightyears behind Windows for being user friendly. So don't just believe Linux fans, check for yourself before switching from Windows to Linux. Take your time, use it at least one month before deciding. @spapakons Have a look at Linux software Timeshift
Its like windows restore-points, but on steroids as it can restore every single file.
Even if the OS isn't booting you can run a timeshift restore from a live USB and just point to the system disk.

Well let me thank you for the heads up on Ubuntu. I'm not a Linux power user so Debian suits me fine. I suppose it really depends on what you do with your OS. I do know that broken packages are no fun at all. I think my fix for that was using SUPERGRUB 2 but it was years ago since I've had to do a repair and I'm pretty sure that was before LMDE7. For anyone interested in using Linux I would advise keeping Windows if you use it and simply go with dual boot. I do a little bit on Linux each day and I'm happy with it but I still use Windows. Should the day come where I find Windows intolerable at least I will have an option.

Google AI... AI miss a lot of things.
Ask Google AI about: How the Linux app Timeshift works and how it can restore a Linux distribution that have gotten corrupted files during a update that went bad do to power loss?

No you could not know unless you have heard about that app. :-) in the same way a lot of windows users dont know of good backup software for Windows unless someone mention it. :-)
I only gave you a tip for the future as it can not solve the problem unless it was installed in the first place. But check out Timeshift for the future :-) (y)

in the Ubuntu store install 'synaptic'

next time open synaptic and run update then fix broken packages
synaptic will find any required dependencies and replace any corrupt files.

best of luck Steve ..

Yah, but how many people wouuld know how to compile code. Only the tech elites, and I'll bet not all of them. And debug or change that code????
How many apps on Windows do you have to compile yourself?

And by scan I mean with NFC from interegrated chip in id card or passport.
In the Netherlands that chip was implemented to be scanned by NFC in 2021.
And because ID cards and passports in NL are valuable for 10 years, half the population here does not have an ID with a chip that can be read by NFC! Mine and that of my wife do not have that NFC chip yet.

Besides that you would need to have a smartphone with NFC reading facility to use it. I have a (cheap) smartphone without such a chip, seldomly use it anyway.

So for futute use of the Internet I would be forced to buy a new ID card, where I don't need one yet and a new smartphone device with NFC, which are'nt the cheapest.

The DigID that is used here for logging in to official sites, some time ago was intended to use that chip as well as the only entrance way. But that was postponed because people without suitable ID and suitable smartphone would not be able to file their tax return online on the site that is meant for it. And no more entrance to insurance, hospitals and other official sites, which all use DigID for logging in!

So that whole ID by NFC Chip is a farce!

in the Ubuntu store install 'synaptic'

next time open synaptic and run update then fix broken packages
synaptic will find any required dependencies and replace any corrupt files.

best of luck Steve ..
I had Synaptic installed and of course I tried to fix my broken packages from there. It seemed to install some packages but didn't complete as there were too many errors. It seemed my Ubuntu system was beyond repair and most packages needed to be reinstalled (aka in-place/upgrade repair). I even tried the command in Terminal that it reinstalls all packages, didn't work either because of dependency errors. Shouldn't the stupid tools automatically solve dependency errors by adding the missing packages? Say "user friendly" again. If I knew about Timeshift I would have done a final attempt. However I guess this is like Windows System Restore. It wouldn't have any point to go back to if I would install it after the damage. I should have already installed it to be able to recover my damaged system. For the time being I want to experiment with Zorin OS which seems a little more user friendly. Probably I have to install Timeshift there just in case I need it. I don't like the default Brave browser so I added Microsoft Edge to play with and Google Chrome. I also added VLC and Adobe Reader so far. Libre Office was already installed.

PS: Added Timeshift, I am creating a backup right now.

Exactly my point. I was referring to companies who makes these tools. It's very easy to cross-compile and with today's Vibe Coding trends it's even easier.

There is no way that Microsoft will legally be able to require you to prove your identity by uploading a scan of a photo ID such as your drivers license. It will be challenged in court. Microsoft will lose.

Note California AFAIK will only be asking for your birth date. Since people will simple lie and not have to actually prove whether it is true or not the whole thing is pointless.

They will only be doing it in California because the people in California are know-it-all and think they have the right to force the whole country to do what they demand. I wish Microsoft had the fortitude to just stop selling computers in California so they wouldn't have to go along with this nonsense.

Yes, adults can lie since it doesn't matter anyway. Microsoft wants to know if the user is adult or not. They don't care about the actual date of birth. So even a fake date of birth will work. But children cannot lie because they can't pass for an adult on a face check with a live webcam nor thay can provide a fake ID. Also Microsoft will simply tolerate California nonsense. They are not stupid to lose all these customers by banning California. Think like trying to buy cigarettes or alcohol. The seller sees you are an adult but he has to ask for your ID anyway. He simply sees you have one and gives you the product without reading it. Same for Microsoft which will check you are an adult once while creating your account. Not all the time! So what is the big deal about it? Just provide a fake date of birth and your real date is protected. No need to complain about it. It like complaining that the speed limit on a certain road is too low. So what? Your complaint is not going to change the limit.

PS: If you decline to confirm your age you will be put at the lowest range (less than 10) and you won't be able to make purchases in Microsoft Store or access higher rated apps and games. Same for websites.
