Windows Defender has an update error

First time this issue hit me. I would rt. click on the taskbar: "Check for protection updates" and, got this back... I can't find the error code, Network connections are solid. Tried: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth + Sfc /scannow a restart and, I get the same error. any help would be nice. thanks !

Try the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Other steps you can try:

Restarting your machine
Reset Windows Defender signature update package using the following:

cd %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender

MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures

MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate

I had the same error this morning and posted a thread about it. It turns out that there is an update to the AntiMalware Platform which if it's not installed properly causes this problem. The update is kb4052623 and should be auto installed along with the updated Defender version. The updated Platform should be 4.18.25040.2 and can be checked in Control Panel/Reliability Monitor.
It eventually installed after a few restarts.

Hello @oldschool !!! I found the same update package on the "Microsoft Security Intelligence" website. (thanks for sending it) My ISP is laying down Fiber & cables outside. I was on the phone with them for almost 2 hrs. There sending a tech out Sat. You see out here in AZ. where it will hit 106F temp - the snowbirds leave & they try to disconnect there DSL cables on the outside. & screw up everyone else's . So I have a tech comming out . I auto Hide the taskbar - & if it disconnects? I may miss it. It's running now - but the Windows Defender issue still has an error code?
I tried the steps you posted - thanks for the info. I'm still getting the error? maybe I'll get some more replies...... regards 24H2 (OS Build 26100.4061)

Please check your platform and engine versions, which @Mitch referred to in Post #3, and make sure they're updated.

You might be able to install this Update by checking for Windows Updates not the Defender app or download it directly from

The AntiVirus version is not updated. The current version is 1.429.133.0. The other thing you can do (and worked for me) is to wait for the next antivirus update from 133 and try again. Sometimes the next version drags the platform update with it. You can check the latest version in the link in my previous post. Due to the time difference between the US and UK I have to add 1 hour to the release time for it to be available in the Defender app.

@Mitch thanks for the reply ! This is a first for me. I was thinking about a download from the website you posted - but which one? the top I would suspect
Microsoft Defender Antivirus for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 64bit ??? or I can wait. someone else sent a pm for me to empty the cache of WD ?

“Resetting” Windows Update, as far as I know, won’t cause any issues.
But you problem is solved so I wouldn’t worry about it?
