There was a problem when I was backing up my primary SSD but I don't know what the message means. I'm trying the backup again. Originally I entered "16 February 2025" as the backup name. But this time I selected one of the options (Isom...?). I got the same error message.

Software. Setting up an ssd that’s never been used is different from setting up a new usb.

You may need to clear those last two attempted backups and change your sleep settings to "never" until you can get a complete back up made. Have you checked the error code?

I was thinking the same thing. The error code meant the device (?) was waiting for a reply from the computer. But that wouldn’t happen if the computer wasn’t able to respond. Yeah, I’ll change the sleep settings until I finish the backup.

I’m on the bus so I don’t have the code with me. But I looked up the code when it was displayed on the monitor so I know what it means.

I turned off the power and battery settings that would have put my computer to sleep when I back it up. However, the backup drive looks a little odd when I see it in Macrion. What is the 16 mb unformattedsection doing there? I thought I might have done something wrong when I went to File Explorer and formatted the D: drive, so I formatted it again. The 16 mb unformatted is still there. Is it something I need to be concerned about?

Windows creates a 16MB Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR) on GPT (GUID Partition Table) disks during installation. It serves a specific role in managing partitions and system functionality. Here's why it's there:

Facilitates Partition Management – The MSR acts as a placeholder for system utilities or software that may need space for metadata, ensuring smooth partition resizing and maintenance.
Avoids Fragmentation Issues – When partitions are created or resized, Windows might need small gaps to store metadata. The MSR provides this space, preventing potential fragmentation.
Required for Dynamic Disks – If you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, Windows uses space from the MSR for metadata.
OEM and Third-Party Software Use – Some OEMs or third-party utilities may store system-related data there.
The 16MB MSR is only present on GPT disks. On MBR (Master Boot Record) disks, this partition does not exist, as MBR has a different partitioning scheme.

16MB is a tiny fraction of 1GB, so just ignore it.

Are you still getting error messages when you attempt a backup?

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

Not a timing error message, no. But when I tried to unmount the external drive before having dinner, the computer kept saying the drive was in use even though I didn’t have any programs open. I finally had to uninstall MaleareBytes before I could unmount the drive and safely remove it. Also, File Explorer had been showing 2 instances of the drive (drive D:) one was at the same “level” as the C: drive and the other was a level above the C: drive. I hope that makes sense. I didn’t think to take a screenshot, which would explain things better.

To be fair, I'm not a Macrium user so I wouldn't even attempt to tell you why that's happening. I use a different approach to backing up my data. 1) I actually use Windows Backup. There's a 50/50 chance that it might work. 2) I use Kaspersky. It does a very good job saving personal data. 3) I make an entire clone of my OS and tuck it in a dark dry cool corner and label it "Blah Blah - Clone" and forget about it until some event should occur that might cause me to need it. 4) I use the rather sketchy Windows File History. 5) Once a week I archive my personal data to an ARCHIVES folder on an entirely different drive in RAID 1. 6) I make regular System Restore points because much like Windows Backup there's a 50/50 chance they'll work.

Windows has taught me time and time again that there is no one safe method. This is my Windows user experience. User preference prevails. :-)
