Windows Update - 2026-01 Security Update (KB5074109) Fails


Repair Install solved my problems. Takes time. but easy and effective.

Sorry but I run the BAT file which completed correctly without error however the update still failed. I repeated it a second time but still no joy. Following runnning the bat script it did make a difference in the sence the download completed to 100%, ir was failing before at just 7% on a fast fibre 1GB internet connection, but the subsequent inbstall failed at about 60%. Troubnleshooting has been hampered by a corresponding issue with my SSD C: drive making out at 100% while the system was sitting idle but I seem to have finally batted that problem away, however still seeing Task Manager not working properly and explorer drops off the perch too from time to time although it has been kind to me today.

Hello everyone. I have the same problem with 2026-01 Security Update (KB5074109) (26200.7623). Installation error – 0x800f0991. I've tried all the advice you've given here, but I still get the same error. Perhaps my only hope is that Windows 11 will download the update itself next month. However, I don't know if I'm just getting my hopes up for nothing. I really don't want to reinstall Windows 11, but what if there's no other solution? That's my only consolation right now.

I spent four hours with Microsoft Support on three calls and they could not fix it for me. Make a full backup using Macrum Reflect (FREE)) and create a rescue disk with it also, Then do the System Recovery shown above. It took me about six hours, but went flawlessly and installed Win 11 Pro 25H2 with all the latest updates perfectly. No danger with a Macrium backup/Rescue if you have any problems. Good luck!!

I tried your advice, but my PC won't let me do the backup: "unauthorized operation." Could you please send me a link with detailed instructions on how to do this corrective reinstallation? Thanks a lot in advance.

Simplest solution (least time wasted - less than 2 hours) - is an in-place upgrade:


And it will preserve your installed apps - while reverting Windows core settings (from Device Manager and all the meaningless bloatware deactivated from Settings) and apps to default. This Windows Update Errors - are usually caused by O&O ShutUp and similar apps or by uninstalling Windows Store features and such - which in latest Updates (from late 2025) - were turned into core Windows features and labeled as dependency - thus, if Windows Update can't find that feature - it will fail with confusing code errors like above. For proper troubleshooting (not of that automated debugging stuff) - run Terminal (PS or CMD) as Admin and save an update Log File with the following command:

Get-WindowsUpdateLog

Open it with an app like Notepad++ (more convenient that Notepad and such) - and use the search engine to look for FAILED variables. And you'll find the culprits, but again - easiest way to solve this issues - is the in-place Upgrade - since 90% of the times - the failed variables aren't possible to fix with the old ways of troubleshooting/fixing Windows errors (troubleshooting wise - Windows updates are in the worst state - the biggest Windows mess - due to changes meant to enforce Microsoft bloatware which is now labeled as dependency - not just optional like before).

I'm sorry to report that conducting the Reinstall did not work for me so I have turned off system updates completely pending replacing Windows 11. I do not have any more time to waste and thankfully my time is not worthless the way Microsoft seem to think it is.

Tony ... MS seems to be working hard to fix the multiple failure issues with KB5074109 ... they have been shocked by the number of users impacted and the range of issues so there is a lot of work to do but I am hopeful that they will issue a stable fix soon. My problem is that "older" Pcs which are fixed with sleep state S3 and cannot chnage to S0 (like mine, even though it is less than 3 years old!!) cause sleep state to crash the PC. Again, MS have acknowledged that this issue exists. Let's hope it sorts soon.

Hello,Today, another update appeared: 2026-02 Security Update (KB5077181) (26200.7840). To my surprise, it cannot be installed again. Can anyone please advise? I am really at a loss with Windows 11. Thank you in advance. Do I have to reinstall the entire Windows system ?

Unable to install here also. Goes through the motions , then uninstalls, I wish MS would test before issuing.
