Windows Update - 2026-01 Security Update (KB5074109) Fails

Ani zde se mi nedaří instalovat. Prochází rutinou, pak odinstaluje, přál bych si, aby Microsoft to otestovalo před vydáním žádosti.
But when I download the update and click on install, it starts—BUT then it says the update was not successful, and when I ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth to check, it reported a fixable error, but DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth couldn't fix it, and sfc /scannow told me everything was fine. That's where it ends. At least Hasleo helped. I'm not going to bother with updates anymore and will wait for a fix – but I doubt I'll get one, and I'm afraid reinstalling Windows 11 won't help.

I believe the problem is in the update; it appears that, for whatever reason, MS failed to test this update on a wide range of configurations and as a result it has failed on many. Some are suggesting that involving AI in creating this update is to blame but I'm no expert; although I know that AI cannot really do anything outside of its own training data set so if that represents a narrow diversity of configs then we are in for trouble.

Yes, yes. I still don't have this update installed. But it's no longer available in the update menu.
It's a mess. I have been a faithful windows user since v3 but now I am very seriously considering going to Linux. I am currently checking out whether there are any downsides. So far I have found none (my needs are relatively simple); MS seems to have abandoned home users and targeted corporate users because that's where the dosh is!

https://www.elevenforum.com/attachments/1769296451494-webp.161045/ was my post and it worked great on solving KB5074109. I have not tried it for latest Windows patch 2026-02 Security Update "(KB5077181)" (26200.7840) problem.

Sorry I can't help or advise.. I don't have that level of knowledge. I would assume that a clean install should allow you to access all the updates as required. Trouble is that KB 5074109 has caused all sorts of serious issues many of which are hardware related... If you have a hardware conflict with that update your iso route might take you in a vicious circle. MS are not being very helpful in this respect. Good luck.

Hi all,
Here’s a short summary of how I resolved an issue on Windows 11 (build 26200.7623) with the 0x800f0991 error, where updates were failing and the system got stuck in the “Restore from volume 3” loop.

  1. I first tried a repair using a Windows 11 24H2 USB, but it failed – updates wouldn’t install.
  2. Then I used a Windows 11 25H2 ISO/USB and ran an in-place upgrade (keep personal files and apps) – it worked immediately.
  3. After the repair:
    • SFC = clean
    • DISM /ScanHealth = no corruption
    • CHKDSK = no errors
    • PIN / Windows Hello needed to be reset (normal after system repair)
  4. Windows Update now works fine, all previous updates including critical ones are installed.
  5. Immediately after the repair, I created a GOLDEN IMAGE using Hasleo Backup Suite and verified it (EFI + Recovery + C: included, Verify image enabled).
  6. The system is stable, update stack fixed, system components intact, and the Preview update is still waiting – it did not install automatically.

Summary:

  • The problem was not a “dead Windows,” but a combination of corrupted component store + broken update stack.
  • The correct solution is an in-place repair using Windows 11 25H2 ISO/USB.
  • After repair, the system behaves normally and you can create a stable “golden” backup.

Hope this helps anyone running into the same issue.
