windows 11 Pro
I am running windows 11 Pro version 23H2 (OS BUILD 22631.5472) right now.
Earlier today I get a message that there was an update to download and install. I should have made a backup before doing that darn update - but I didn't. :(

Anyway, after it was done and the computer restarted everything is now completely different and I can not find anything now and all my settings are gone. I tried typing in updates and found that the newest update was KB5056580 so I tried selecting to uninstall it. It appears to have uninstalled it but everything is this whole new setup and if I select updates it no longer appears as an update to uninstall but I still can not find anything that I had just before that darn update. The update does appear in the view update history but after selecting to uninstall it, it is now not there.

How can I get back my original settings, get rid of the about this picture icon, the weather information on the bottom taskbar, and that entire screen that pops up when I click on that little weather icon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Exactly ^.
You’ve done something else perhaps. Or… the last cumulative update for 23H2 was July 8th

I ran it and nothing changed for me, so I don’t know.

Latest Build after that update is - 22631.5624

I forgot all about the windows system restore possibility - Thanks!

If that does not work, I will have to check on how to use that Hasleo Backup program to restore the computer.

I lost all my preferences and settings after this update. I have attached the information for the updates that we installed.

Driver updates, definition updates and other updates are all dated from June 21, 2025 or earlier and this just started after the update last night.

I only have the one account and I noticed this morning that I no longer have to log in when I start the computer either.

I am finding all my files / folders by doing a search in C > Users

When I used the search feature to find the my documents folder it wants to start syncing. When I searched for a specific file it took me to a folder that shows as desktop > documents and there is just one folder in there but that is not what I was looking for and I don't need or want that one, but don't want to delete it and find that I did need it.

This is very strange and very annoying. The things I had on my desktop are no longer there and I had to do a hunt and peck to find a couple of very important folders regarding my health that I need this week. My browsers are as if they were just installed for the first time and all my bookmarks are gone as well and I didn't make a backup of those bookmarks as of yet since I have only been using this pc for a short time so far. I can get most of those back if I go back to my old windows 10 home pc and create a backup of them and then import them, but I still lost some really recent and important bookmarks.

Just trying to set this up again to aid with my visibility issues is problematic. Hopefully that system restore will help.1752504601826.webp1752504601826.webp

Your opportunity for System restore should be taken now NOT after you've installed loads of stuff, if you're short on disk space those very restore point could get deleted. If you have a signed in and sync'd browser your bookmarks should return on sync.

I have not done anything just yet since we started getting hit with a lot of storms and heavy rains yesterday afternoon. Didn't want to take the chance of being in the middle of using system restore and have a power outage or something else. I have not done much besides try to find out where everything went to when I did the update that windows was saying was needed the other day and somehow changed everything. (so I still have plenty of space and I have not installed anything new yet)

Anyway, when I turned on the computer this morning I paid close attention and noticed that when the pc turns on now it states administrator instead of my name.

When I first connected this new computer and turned it on, I went through the normal steps and it asked about saving my stuff from my old desktop computer which I did so I am guessing that is why all my settings were already set up when windows 11 pro started.

At that time as well as when I first started using that old Dell that was originally shipped to me with windows 8 and the free upgrade to windows 10 I was never given an option to set up the pc as any specific user. I just thought that since it was just me that I was automatically the administrator as well, is that not correct? Shouldn't I already be the administrator on my pc since it is just me and there is nobody else?

Will make a restore point prior to doing the restore as well.

Update - there were 3 restore points for July 13, 2025 so I wasn't exactly sure which to select since that was when I got the notification for the update and to install it. There was one for 8:09pm that stated Windows Module Installer (an installer) / another one for 7:48 pm that said the same thing and there was also on listed at 8:11AM Windows Update - but I didn't actually click to allow that update until that evening. I went with that one (the restore point with the 8:11 time listed ) and after it did all it had to do, my computer is back to where it was prior to allowing the computer / windows to do that update.
I am no longer being logged in as the administrator without requiring any password back to the way it was originally.

I always thought that I was the administrator on this pc since when it was set up there was no option / choice on being set up as a users or the administrator and there are no other users on this computer either. Shouldn't I already be the administrator on my pc?

Thank You
