Windows Updates on 11 vs 10

Windows 11 is vastly better at doing the monthly updates than 10 is. I get the cumulative updates installed in 5 to 8 minutes. Every Win 10 machine is much slower at it. They all start installing the update and fairly quickly get to 100% but then sit there for about 3-5 minutes before reverting back to 17%, quickly hitting 20, sitting for a few minutes, jumping to 44, sitting again, jumping to 74, sitting again for a couple of minutes and then slowly climbing back to 100% where it sits again for a minute or 3 before finally saying a restart is needed. The cumulative updating process takes a good 25 minutes or more.

I don’t think there’s a lot of content in the 11 CU updates at present

If the 25 Minutes is an issue

It's normal for updates to take longer over time, the simple fact is that Microsoft are often conservative so add new code without removing the old code that used to handle the tasks. This then means that subsequent updates also have to clean up the old code, (although I think that sometimes MS forgets about it until it starts to cause issues

What you probably need is a fresh install, I know It can be in business where a single tech has to manage multiple systems

What we used to do is create a new image every six Months or so and use this to update all the user systems to a build from a later date - It meant that all users had a common baseline so were easier to maintain, It also was a good way to clear the detritus of use, and speed things up generally

What is point of being on Insider if you do not accept updates - Insider builds have built in time-bombs if you do not update.

Sorry. May be I was not clear. I said as in Windows 10 home, I would like to update at my convenient time. Hence my question.

In the end I changed all 3 of mine to 11, still got the incompatible machine on 10 but that is so slow. BTW got much rain down there? It's bucketing down here in the New Forest

Even Insider builds should have a 'Pause updates' option in Windows Update in both Home and Pro. You don't have to wait the full 7 days, you can resume updates any time that's convenient.

Oh yeah, it's absolutely pi$$ing down. Has been since about 9 last night. Took the dogs out earlier, they enjoyed more than me for sure

Wow, I better consider the 25 minutes a non-issue

A fresh install on 5 different machines? No, I believe it is a Windows 10 issue that was fixed in 11.

Perhaps one way of looking at the issue is this: an office building gets cleaned professionally, my home gets cleaned only amateurishly by yours truly, but I prefer to live at home than in an office building

Hi,
I pretty much stopped checking for updates every month when MS started auto downloading and installing them
That was a long time ago and 11 has not changed.

I did just update
Last time was after I upgraded from win-10 on 11-14-2021
Only thing that ever takes 25 minutes even on win-10 is creation and verifying the system images.

I haven't installed any on 10 yet but I typically don't update until I feel like it in 11 case about three months lol
