Would you purchase refurbish HDDs?

I would definitely buy a factory refurbished HDD if the price is right. Usually these drives has had some minor defects from the factory that can easily be fixed. You still get full warranty also, but a product at a much cheaper price.
I am wondering, for amazon at least, if most of them are not just returns for simple things like, the person didn't want it but it was functionally fine.

Are these Seagate drives?
If so it would cost less to get them directly from Seagate.
Keep in mind though refurb drives usaully have a very short warranty or no warranty at all.

Seagate are only six months for refurb.

At least on Amazon, you don't save nearly half the price! Let's look at an example or two. For the pittance, I'll take new with a full warranty!

Yeah but don't forget to enter your postal code (near the top left of the page), then check the delivery cost (near the top right of the page). Server Part Deals are on Canadian Amazon but they're in Florida so they ship from Florida which is usually a bit warmer than Canada.

that's why I am asking here. If people bought them, how did they faire? In my server I will be running Raid 5 where I can have a drive failure which will show up on my server case as a red light, I can hotswap that drive out with a new one. So does the data show that refurbished HDD less reliable or is it, they might be, but who knows...

Thinking about getting an eGpu for this system to take on the road with us.
No, never. Same goes for SSDs (even more so). Experience wise - if an HDD if still solid (no issues whatsoever) - 2 years after purchase, that usually lasts a long time. If there's issues - even refurbished - there's chances for bumping into similar issues again (since they replace the faulty component - but the core issue could be tied to the firmware or a different component).

Good point. I think I will spend the extra and get new drives. It's not just my storage it's client storage as well.

The only used electronics I’ve ever bought is a SanDisk memory card reader, and it still works. I don’t buy refurbished or used drives. When my current M.2 SSDs get old, I might use them in a secondary lab environment or something similar. I also prefer to buy all my components new.

So you would trust your precious data on a used HDD that somebody else put unknown wear and tear on? 🙄 🤨
Read the product description, the HDD has 0 POH (Power-On Hours) or at least it should have. A HDD with a POH value of 0 means that the HDD is unused. You can verify the POH yourself like how @Brink explained here.

that's why I am asking here. If people bought them, how did they faire? In my server I will be running Raid 5 where I can have a drive failure which will show up on my server case as a red light, I can hotswap that drive out with a new one. So does the data show that refurbished HDD less reliable or is it, they might be, but who knows...

I would never trust my data like this in order to save a few bucks. If you can't afford it, then maybe put it off until you can.

Good point. I think I will spend the extra and get new drives. It's not just my storage it's client storage as well.

Well there ya go. Now you're getting it. lol... 👍

Then it should be listed as new. Otherwise, they're engaging in funny semantics.

Agreed.

Sales regulation/legislation may vary from country to country, but in the UK something can't legally be re-sold/described as 'new' if it has been returned by a customer, even if it was never unboxed/used. This of course happens relatively frequently with suppliers such as Amazon, which may be one reason that pre-sold 'as-new' items may be only marginally less than the genuine 'new' price.
