I have a XPS15 9500 teamed with the WD19TB docking station with two external displays, connected via DisplayPort (primary) and USB-C (secondary). All equipment has the latest available drivers installed.

I've recently upgraded to Windows 11 and now when I start up my system (via the dock button), it does start but there's no display on my primary monitor. The only way to get the display working is to force the shutdown (by holding the dock button) and re-powering the system.

This was never an issue with Windows 10, any build, so I suppose it's Windows 11 that's responsible for it. Regardless, have any of the folks here had a similar issue and possibly found a workaround?

have a look at the bottom of this post it may help

It's a GPO setting set it to "allow all"
Administrative Templates\System\Kernel DMA Protection\Enumeration policy for external devices incompatible with Kernel DMA Protection

Thank you for this tip, @Ruben!

It looks you're right - thanks to your advice I've found this Dell support article, and WD19TB is listed as affected.
It concerns however machines connected to a domain and I'm not connected... Would it still be applicable to me?

go ahead and make the changes in the GPO

Done and seems to work! I hope it was not an exception, but I will keep observing!

Don't loose your sleep over it. It will work and if doesn't for some vague reason you now know where to change the settings just go back in there and disable it and then re-enable it

Yeah, it still gives me a heartstop when booting up, as I'm getting the display's "I'm going to sleep" message anyway... But it wouldn't go to sleep eventually, just scares me to do so. ;)

Quite interesting this wasn't an issue on Win10 where the same mechanism has been long-existing...

Unfortunately, this is still happening and it's getting worse - sometimes my monitors won't go to sleep when the system has been powered off.

Shouldn't I change some UEFI settings? I've turned off Thunderbolt security completely and enabled TB pre-boot modules to access USB devices instantly, but I don't think it's brought any change...

The cause is most likely bad drivers that do not support Kernel DMA Protection and "DMA-remapping" most probably it could be Nvidia head over to the Nvidia forums and ask them if they do know about a driver which does support the above

I talked to Dell Support and they told me they believed it was Windows 11 issue, but they needed to isolate it and release the updated drivers.

Just getting nVidia driver updated to the latest version, let's see if this helps.

I've updated nVidia and Intel Thunderbolt drivers to the latest versions available. nVidia's is dated at Oct 26, so hopefully it's been tested with Windows 11. I can't say the same on the TB one, but it's newer than the one I had on my system. None of those have been blessed by Dell, but I expect no trouble with them. I hope they will be the cure for my issue as well ;).
