Your advice to seniors... stay with Windows 10 or try Windows 11

I have no idea why would I want to run Android apps on my desktop, for example.
With WSA you could duplicate your phone on your desktop, in case you misplaced your phone.

I gave other examples further above.

Seems there's a lot of us here, aged like fine wine. I'll be 82 next week and bought first computer in '92 after having worked years with WU TeleType 28 and dumb terminals. Retired and the next week offered a job in a computer store, been building and fixing since and doing some training in use.

Meaning what exactly? There is no sim card slot in my desktop and even if some software managed to duplicate a sim card, there is no radio in my desktop either, so how on earth can it duplicate my phone?

Simple, your phone is online, your desktop is online, and that's how you "RDP" your phone from your desktop, with no sim in your desktop.

Even if your phone is offline, you could still work with the content of your phone depending on how you set up the sync between the two, presumably similar to how you work with offline OneDrive.

'Find My Phone' may still work if your phone is switched off, depending on how you configure things.

etc.

All of the above is well within WSA potential, it is really just old technologies adapted to the WSA platform.

Although there may be true innovation also, e.g. plug a sim in a USB slot of your desktop and do even more with true cloning.

Of course, it takes a little army of code monkeys to make it all happen

Edit: I am well aware that phone cloning is fraught with legal issues, so it may take a little army of legal monkeys too :scream:

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I am not an expert or a senior, however my Windows 11 experience so far has been virtually flawless. I have had no issues with any programs I was previously running on Windows 10, and I was able to configure everything on Windows 11 using Windows 10 tutorials. On top of that, I love the UI, the security, and everything else so far that I have encountered. Lets not forget about Android App integration. I actually would go as far as to say, (at least in my experience) that it is more stable than Windows 10. I think Apple should be scared, really, and this is coming from someone who has not been a Windows fan in the past.

I don't know, call me old-fashioned, but I use my phone to make calls and my computer to compute and communicate. To me these are two different devices with clearly distinct usage patterns. I see no reason to mix them and I absolutely hate all "all-in-one" approaches (yes, I have four remotes on my couch and it never even crossed my mind to buy a universal one ).

Well, as I wrote in another thread, I like redundancy. Usually, I use a phone as a phone and a computer as a computer. But it's nice to be able to use the phone as a computer and the computer as a phone.

For example, if you work on your computer and login with SMS authentication, then it's nice to receive the security code right there in your computer.

I think that W11 is not so very different from W10 that older people should avoid it, Especially if they have younger relatives or friends to help with the finer points of setting it up. And older people like me at 72 posting on this type of forum is not the average pc user, who would probably know nothing about computer forums. The biggest problem will be incompatible hardware, I was surprised to find that my best pc was 12 years old, when I found the motherboard receipt in with some software, and even my laptop which uses DDR4 has only got a sixth generation i3 processor, even though it has secure boot and TPM running by default.

Although it does get harder to learn new things as we age, we don't have the "copyright"! Younger folks can be just as technically challenged.

My two daughters illustrate that perfectly. One says, "No, mama, I can fix it myself!" The other one says, "Just fixit mama!"

So sorry to hear that, Paul. I lost my husband on November 15, 2018, so I know how you feel. Nothing will help very much, so I won't tell you what you've already heard numerous times.

I have found friends here and in TenForums . com that have helped to narrow the healing time. And, of course, our local Senior Wellness and Activity Center has helped with keeping busy.

I think keeping busy has helped most of all.

any change to a new OS is daunting, because people dont really know what they are unleashing. I am still on Win 10 because I have not had any notification to upgrade. I have just had upgraded to an up to date MB and brand new AMD PCU. Win 10 is misbehaving slightly andf I cant pin it down. I am 73 this year but am tempted to give 11 a try.

Nothing wrong with Seniors if they are active and willing -- I've recently been training a couple of 70 year olds to fly small planes - they've been perfectly safe -- a lot safer in fact than some 20 year olds on the roads in their cars. !!!

Many seniors have more time too so can absorb things without feeling under pressure to learn them quickly or get embarrassed if they make mistakes.

Cheers

I helped a number of Senior pilots during my 30+ years in Air Traffic Control, most were still extremely sharp. Last place I was at was on the list to be modernized [closed/consolidated] and I retired just before the weather reports changed to METAR, didn't have to learn something new. Then got a job in a computer shop.
