While installing W11 from an SO file the subject message appeared along with the image below. The installation was on a W10 computer. The message as seen in the image also reads "You'll need to use recovery tool. If you don't have any installation media... contact your PC administrator....

I'm retired so this forum is the closest thing that I have as a "PC administrator." Are there any repair tools (hopefully free) that can help?

Thanks.broken PC.webp

You use the word "installing" but do you mean "Upgrading"?
The error code 0xc0000001 means there may be issues with the boot device(Drive) or corruption in some boot files. (BCD)

You have multiple drives installed. If I was guessing (and I am) I would suspect the following:
I believe you went into the update with your Windows 10 BCD written to the wrong drive (a drive other than your system drive). An upgrade rewrites the BCD and puts it on the first EFI partition it SEES depending on how the bios addresses the drives. This is not always your system drive where it belongs. This is also why we stress here when INSTALLING Windows that all other drives are disconnected. This probably wrote the Win11 BCD it to a drive different to the drive where Windows 10 BCD was written to. Now Windows doesn't know which BCD to boot from.

You would have boot from installation media and use diskpart to see if my guess is indeed true. Someone here smarter than me would have to give you instructions. I hope I'm wrong.

1) find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB)

2) create a bootable windows Media Creation Tool (MCT) (Windows 11 iso):

3) Find out the F key so that you can boot to a device

4) If it is a custom computer then change the boot order so that you can boot to the external USB device or drive

5) power on and boot to the bootable windows 11 iso

6) attempt startup repair > take pictures > post images or share links

7) search for srttrail.txt > post a share link

8) click on command prompt and open Administrator X: \Windows\system32\cmd.exe > X:\Sources>

9) type these commands:

notepad

notepad

bcdedit | find "osdevice"

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /scanos

bootrec /rebuildbcd

Copy and paste commands with results to notepad > save to a flash drive (free space on the iso flash drive can be used) > post share links with commands and results

It sounds like an upgrade from an ISO, but I'd want to know the answer to your question to make sure. But I was going to suggest a chkdsk in addition to what zbook typed faster than I did. :)

Thanks.
I see two computers on your "My computer". Is the Acer_Desktop Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 you are trying to upgrade to Win 11?
Officially Win 11 can't be installed on the Acer_Desktop Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 computer. Did you use any kind of workaround?
Did you try a Clean install (boot from a Win 11 USB installation drive) or did you try an upgrade (From running windows, run setup)?

We need much more information. What you did and how you did.
As already suggested, you need a Win 11 USB installation drive to boot from and use it to repair the computer.
